The Panamanian steamer Finance owned by the US government outward bound from Colón, Panama was in a collision with the White Star liner Georgic inward bound for New York, off Sandy Hook. The Finance sank within ten minutes with the loss of four lives. Next day a tug picked up a single bag of mail. A label was applied on the reverse stating “The piece of mail herewith was recovered from the wreck of steamer Finance, which was sunk through collision with steamer Georgic, Thursday Nov. 26, 1908.” (Image) (image002)
