 1879 Second Anglo-Afghan War - Kabul Field Force
(Sep 26) cover to England from Surgeon-Major JH Porter to his wife in Bayswater, England endorsed "Aly Khyle/Afghanistan 26.9.79" and "Stamped via Brindisi" with India 4a & 1a tied by 'F.No 11' (FPO 11) Bars
cancel (Proud #K2, LRD), on reverse 'FIELD P.O./SEP26/No11' (Proud #D2, 5,000pts), 'KOHAT/SEP26' (Kyber Province) and 'OUTW/BOMBAY/4OCT' transits, 'LONDON.W/7/PAID/27OCT79' arrival cds in red on face. On the flap there is a personal
message "The Minah is sitting on the table like boss/Clerk won't leave his tent".
Following the Treaty of Gandamak (May 26, 1879) a British Residency was established at Kabul under Sir Louis Cavagnari. On Sep 3 1879
Major Cavagnari and his escort, were massacred by mutinous Afghan troops. Surgeon-Major Porter was summoned to join the 'Kabul Field Force' under General Roberts at Aly Kheyl (arriving Sep 22), and was entrusted to organise
field hospitals in preparation for the advance to reclaim Kabul, departing Sep 27 (the day after this letter was posted). Porter's commanding officer Dr S.C. Townsend was injured in an attack by hill tribes that same day, and from
that moment forward Major Porter acted as Principal Medical Officer to the K.F.F., his professionalism during the campaign winning the respect of his peers and commanding officers.
Following the defeat of the Afghan Army at the
Battle of Charasiab (Oct 6, 1879), Kabul was consequently retaken (Oct 13, 1879). Porter died of pneumonia in Kabul in January 1880.
Joshua Henry Porter had previously served in Crimea (1853), India, Sepoy Mutiny (1857-58),
and 1870 in the Franco-Prussian War. His experiences in the field inspired him to write 'The Surgeon's Pocket-book' (pub.1875). (Image 1)
