 1955 (Sep 5) use of 10d Aerogramme (BW
#A8) to Melbourne, sent by member on No 2 A.C.S. (Airfield Construction Squadron) aboard migrant ship SS New Australia en route to Singapore to commence construction of an additional airstrip at RAAF
Butterworth. The writer states the letter to be posted at around 1.00am the following morning at Thursday Island, confirmed by the Thursday Island '6SE55' datestamp and 'PAQUEBOT' handstamp in violet alongside, additionally there is a circular
'DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY/CONCESSION/312/POSTAGE RATE' handstamp at left. The first item we have offered related to this military undertaking
At the time, this was Australia's biggest overseas construction project, as part of the
Allied Far Eastern Strategic Reserve initiative to counter the threat of communism in South-East Asia. The airstrip was completed in early 1958, with the Canberra bombers of No 2 Squadron arriving by July 1958, subsequently engaged
