cover originally carried to England by Imperial & KLM certified on back by B Sheil with Australia KGV 2d tied 'DARWIN NT/3OC35/AUSTRALIA' datestamp, then carried by Kingsford Smith &
Pethybridge on their attempted flight to Australia which was abandoned at Brindisi, Italy after the 'Lady Southern Cross' was badly damaged and posted on return to England with GB KGV 1½d brown x2 (one has
'VO/CoL' perfin for Vacuum Oil Co, presumably added for the redirection fee), 11-line cachet in red on reverse numbered "11". Only 49 carried, fine condition. (Image 1)

First Flight Covers. 1943 (Sep 1) cover to Sydney, carried from New Guinea
by Catalina A24-52 of 11 Squadron RAAF, which crashed Sep 7 in Cleveland Bay, Townsville Queensland, killing pilot and twelve other officers and crew, with a boxed censor cachet reading 'AUSTRALIAN/MILITARY FORCES/PASSED BY CENSOR/2058'. The stamp
has been washed off and there is an accompanying undated letter of apology from the GPO Sydney. One of the rarer of the catalogued major incidents. AAMC #963a. (Image 1)
