Worldwide Public Auction - October 9, 2023

A very warm welcome to our ‘Ten Vendors Rarities’ Sale (Phoenix Sale No 100), to be held in our Boardroom on Monday 9th October, commencing at 10.00am. The sale has attracted the support of a discerning group of vendors who have entrusted us with a host of delightful philatelic gems to entice you. Included are outstanding rarities, significant specialty pieces, and tightly held items not offered to the market for many years, thus offering a rare opportunity to acquire treasures to strengthen even the most advanced collection or exhibit.

Session 1 commences at 10.00am features a choice array of Melbourne CTOs on Kangaroo issues, many of which were produced in very small quantities, including 1st Wmk 2d Die I, 3d Die I, 4d, 6d, 1/-, 5/-, 10/-, £1 & £2 each with the extremely rare ‘JY17/13’ CTO quarter cancels. Other Roos of note include 1st Wmk 9d ‘CA’ & ‘JBC’ Monograms (lots 2038-40), and a cluster of £1 & £2 Bicolours incl a MUH £2 (lot 2060), 2nd Wmk 6d blue Plate 2 ‘CA’’ Monogram strip of 4 (lot 2068), & 3rd Wmk 2d Grey Die IIA Watermark Inverted (lot 2073, 2nd recorded mint example) and rare £2 CTOs; later Bicolour Roos include CTO imprint multiples and exceptional usage on parcel tags or pieces.

We are expecting intense interest in Chris Buckman’s Award Winning 1d Engraved Collection featuring a cornucopia of specialist items that have not been offered to the market for many years. Worthy of special mention are FDI usages on cover (lots 2135-36), a myriad of Imperforate varieties, many within multiples, including Plate 1 Imperforate between stamp and margin (lot 2165) affecting six units in corner block of 30, Plate 2 partial imprint vertical block of 12 Imperforate horizontally (lot 2170), Plate 3 Imperforate between stamp and bottom margin, with both the unique mint example (lot 2186), and the unique used on cover (lot 2187). These are the only other recorded example of this variety.

Session 2 will commence at Lot 2208, not before 12.30pm featuring KGV Heads, Other Pre-Decimals & Decimal issues with many highlights including KGV monogram multiples, varieties, sought-after shades and rare First Day usages including the Single Wmk 1½d black-brown with Parkville FDI cancel (lot 2235, unique), and 2d red-brown Die I (lot 2247, two known). Other KGV rarities include a mint ½d Single-Line Perf (lot 2220), Single Wmk 3d Die I pair Imperforate on three sides (lot 2248), superb 4d blue Harrison one-line imprint block of 4 (lot 2268), 4½d violet Die II mint (2, lots 2323 & 2435 – as part of a presentation folder) & CofA 1½d brown Die II block of 4 Imperforate at top (lot 2330).

Other Pre-Decimals of note include 1½d WA Centenary Imperforate between stamp and lower margin (lot 2346), Kingsford Smith 2d & 3d optd ‘OS’ Imprint blocks of 8 (lot 2349, ex AP Archives), 5/- Harbour Bridge imprint multiples, 10/- & £1 Robes FDCs, wonderful Arms group (lots 2389-2409) with rare ‘SPECIMEN’ overprint varieties, Betty Temple-Watts Birds artwork (lots 2412 & 2414) and decimal errors with the unique 5c Cook Black omitted/partially omitted block of 4 (lot 2422); also exceptional Presentation Folders, Postage Dues & First Flight items.

Session 3 will commence at Lot 2459, no earlier than 3.00pm with fine Australian Colonies including SA 2/6d & 5/- ‘Long Toms’ optd ‘OS’, CTO, Tasmania superb 4d Courier on laid paper unused, & 1891 DLR Keyplate Colour Trial sheet, Victoria with KEVII £100 Stamp Duty essay; then Papua with Sperati forgery of Large ‘Papua’ 2/6d, and Small ‘Papua’ 6d with Overprint Doubled; plus British Commonwealth & World including British Guiana & Ceylon imperf classics, Fiji Times Express rarities, GB. fine 1d Blacks (lots 2609-16), 3d Emblems Plate 3 Imperforate pair (lot 2620) and a scarce group of Sardinian Cavallini (lots 2658-69).
