4001 Used imageVery Rare Original Label from a Zyklon B Canister Dating back to the Nazi Era and World War II. | This image shows an original label from a Zyklon B canister dating back to the Nazi era and World War II. The text indicates it was produced by I.G. Farbenindustrie and Kaliwerke A.G., Kolin (a production site in occupied Bohemia). Initially developed as a highly toxic cyanide-based pesticide for delousing, Zyklon B was repurposed by the Nazi regime as a weapon for systematic mass murder during the Holocaust, primarily in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Authentic labels and canisters from this era are exclusively rare. Toward the end of the war, the SS systematically destroyed chemical supplies and related documentation to cover up their crimes. Remaining stocks were later neutralized and destroyed by Allied forces for public safety. Nearly all surviving genuine specimens are kept strictly within state archives, judicial evidence collections from post-war trials, or major historical institutions like the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and the German Historical Museum. 4005 Used image1941 (23 Sep) Third Reich, Germany, Censored Postcard of an Italian Laborer from Labor Camp Bochum-Riemke to Italy, Censorship Postmark, More Details in Description | This card with red cesorship postmark was sent in September 1944 by an Italian laborer—likely a civilian forced laborer or an Italian Military Internee (IMI)—stationed at a labor camp in Bochum-Riemke back home to his family near Venice. Following Italy's armistice with the Allies in September 1943, hundreds of thousands of Italian citizens were deported to Germany to sustain the wartime economy through forced labor. Translation: 21-9-44 - My Dearest Parents, I am reaching out to you with this short note after some time to let you know that I am doing well, as I hope is true for all of you in the family, and also Galilei. Dear parents, I delayed writing to you because I did not have the opportunity. And even if you should remain without precise news, do not suspect anything bad—if you only knew what kind of times we are living through. My dear parents, now I am doing well, since the first of September I am free and no longer a prisoner. I feel like a different person, and life will be a bit easier for me. I greet you with a thousand kisses, your son who always remembers you, Livione. Kisses. Historical Context: Bochum-Riemke The location Gemeinschaftslager Bochum-Riemke explains the crucial details hidden between the lines of the postcard: The Change of Status ("since the first of September I am free"): In late summer 1944, Hitler and Mussolini signed an agreement converting Italian Military Internees (IMIs) into civilian workers. This is exactly why Livione writes that he is no longer a prisoner as of September 1st. While this lowered the guard presence, it was a forced transition to keep them working in the German war economy under severe restrictions. The "Times We Are Living Through": By September 1944, Bochum and the wider Ruhr area were targets of devastating Allied bombing raids. Forced labor camps like Riemke had little to no air-raid shelter for the workers, meaning he was likely writing under extreme danger and psychological stress. Provenance: Ex Werbizky. 4006 Used image1943 (6 Nov) Third Reich, Germany, Censored Cover from Labor Camp of Junkers Aircraft Branch Factory Magdeburg to Brussels (Belgium), Audited by Allied Intelligence | Opened and censored cover from labor lamp of Junkers Aircraft Branch Factory Magdeburg to Brussels (Belgium) franked with a red 12-Pfennig stamp featuring Adolf Hitler, cancelled by the postmark of Magdeburg-Neustadt on November 23, 1943, during the height of World War II. The Sender M. Bauden was stationed at Werkheim II Rothensee (Workers' Home II), a Labor camp tied to the Junkers Aircraft and Engine Works (JFM) branch factory in Magdeburg-Rothensee, Germany. The Junkers branch in Magdeburg-Rothensee was a vital military production site for the German Airforce, primarily manufacturing advanced aircraft engines (such as the Jumo 211 and early jet propulsion parts). Given the French/Walloon surname Bauden, the destination (Brussels), and the location at a Werkheim (factory-run barracks), the sender was almost certainly a Belgian forced laborer or civilian. Hundreds of thousands of Belgian citizens were deported to the German Reich to sustain the wartime military economy. Because Belgium was occupied by Nazi Germany, all correspondence crossing borders was strictly monitored to prevent espionage, sabotage, or the leaking of classified industrial data regarding aircraft production The back shows a pink/beige resealing tape printed with „Geöffnet“ (Opened) and an official purple stamp from the High Command of the Wehrmacht (OKW) featuring the Reich eagle and swastika. Allied Intelligence Post-War Note: The pencil annotation on the front—"best test for invisible ink"—written in English, indicates that this cover was later intercepted, kept, or audited by Allied intelligence or postal censors examining Axis communication security techniques. 4008 Used image1944 (20 Nov) Third Reich, Germany, Censored Red Cross Civilian Message Form from Civilian Labor Camp Erzgebirge Warvrin France, Multiple Censor Postmarks | This historical document from November 1944 consists of a Red Cross civilian message form (front) and its matching reply card (back). It illustrates the strictly monitored communication between a French national in Germany and his family in occupied or recently liberated France during World War II. The Sender, Émile Messager was a Frenchman living in Germany. He was registered at Gemeinschaftslager Erzgebirgsperle (a civilian labor camp) in Bernsbach, Erzgebirge. Recipient was his wife in Wavrin, Northern France. The message was written on November 20, 1944, Émile states that he is in excellent health, hopes the same for his wife and "Jeannot," and is waiting for news. The message was strictly limited to 25 words. The documents carry multiple markings showing how the mail was processed through neutral channels and wartime military intelligence: Issued by German Red Cross via the Ettal / Oberbayern office (stamped 13b Ettal/Obb.). Routed through Switzerland by international red cross in Geneva as the neutral intermediary between Germany and France. A red Wehrmacht postmark (Geprüft) with the Nazi eagle signifies it passed military inspection and censorship and French censorship with circular military postmark (Contrôle Postal Militaire) from Lille. There are also blue diagonal lines drawn across the blank fields of the reply card to prevent anyone from adding hidden or uncensored messages later. Provenance: Ex Werbizky. (Image 1) (Image 2)

These men were subjected to grueling physical labor, including heavy parcel handling, railway mail operations, and infrastructure maintenance. As evidenced by wartime correspondence, German postal officials (Postbeamte) were stationed at the camp to serve as administrative staff, camp management, or guards. These officials were housed in separate administrative barracks on the same grounds. Provenance: Ex Werbizky. (Image 1) (Image 2)

4011 Used image1944 (7 Sep) Third Reich, Germany, Rare Complete Censored letter from Euskirchen (Germany) to Prisoner of War Camp in French Marocco | This complete letter is a rare piece of prisoner-of-war postal history The letter was written by Maria Dittmann, postmarked in Euskirchen (Germany) on September 7, 1944, and reviewed by a post-war US tracking bureau on July 13, 1945. It was addressed to her husband, Karl-Heinz Dittmann, a German Master Sergeant (Wachtmeister), who was held at Prisoner of War Camp No. XXVIII in Ksar-es-Souk, French Morocco. The envelope was sealed by the German High Command (OKW) censor in Berlin. However, due to shifting frontlines in late 1944, it likely never reached Morocco. In July 1945, the US Army Prisoner of War Information Bureau (PWIB) stamped it while tracking missing soldiers. Finding "No Record" of him at that station, the letter was eventually returned to Germany as undeliverable. Inside the letter Maria expresses a deep, aching loneliness that grows heavier every Sunday. She admits that she prefers being alone and struggles to go out among people. By November 1944, it will mark exactly two years since their painful separation. She vividly recalls the exact moment of their farewell on November 15, 1942, at 6:30 PM. Provenance: Ex Werbizky. 4012 Used image1940 Third Reich, Germany, Censored Cover from Alsace to the Swiss Center for Prisoners of War in Altishofen, located in the Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland | This postal item dates back to World War II (circa 1940) and documents the communication between German-occupied France (Alsace) and a military internee in neutral Switzerland. Following the collapse of the French frontline in June 1940, around 43,000 soldiers of the 45th French Army Corps fled across the border and were interned by Swiss authorities. The Sender was Marguerite Hartmann (likely the wife or a close relative), writing from 7 Rue des... in Altkirch, a town in the Upper Alsace region of France. At this time, Alsace was under German civilian administration and occupation. The Recipient was Monsieur Edouard Hartmann, a French soldier belonging to the 9th Customs Battalion, 5th Company (9e Bataillon de Douaniers, 5e Compagnie). He was held at the Swiss Center for Prisoners of War in Altishofen, located in the Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland. Because the letter crossed international borders from occupied territory into neutral Switzerland, it shows strict military supervision from both sides: The back features a large circular ink stamp from the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW / Supreme Command of the German Armed Forces) with the Reich eagle and swastika, proving it passed a German foreign mail examination office. The envelope was also opened and resealed with an official trilingual Swiss military censorship paper strip (Geöffnet – Militär-Zensur / Ouvert – Censure militaire / Aperto – Censura militare). The front is marked “Franco de port” (postage free) and stamped “Zustellen / Kriegsgefangenenpost” (Deliver / Prisoner of War Mail) by the Swiss postal directorate, in accordance with the Geneva Convention exempting internee mail from regular fees. 4019 Used image1944 (8 Jan) German Occupation, Germany, Cesored Postcard from Jägern to Portugal, German and Portugeese Censorship Postmark, Chemically examined for Invisible Ink | This is a rare and significant World War II postal document dated January 8, 1944 showcasing the direct intersection of civilian life, military censorship, and counter-espionage in occupied Europe. Written in Polish by Maria Nalezińska from Schönwald (located in the Warthegau, a region of occupied Poland annexed by Nazi Germany), the text is a seemingly ordinary family update. Despite its innocent tone, the postcard triggered intense security protocols as it traveled from occupied Poland to neutral Lisbon, Portugal The front features the official eagle-and-swastika transit stamp of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW), the German High Command responsible for inspecting all foreign mail. Upon arrival in Lisbon—a major diplomatic and intelligence hub during the war—the card was processed and stamped by the Portuguese censorship authority (3ª Secção). The prominent, sweeping blue/purple streak across the Polish text on the back is physical proof of wartime chemical censorship. German or Allied postal inspectors swiped the card with chemical indicator solutions (such as iodine or iron compounds) to detect hidden text written in invisible or "sympathetic" ink, a common practice used to intercept covert intelligence. 4029 Used image1943 (13 Aug) Third Reich, Germany, Folded Letter from a Civilian Forced Laborer from Wanne-Eickel to a Friend in Fishborn Germany | The documents represent a rare, preserved piece of postal history documenting the lives of two young Eastern European women—referred to under the Nazi regime as "Ostarbeiter" (civilian forced laborers)—who were deported from Soviet territories to Nazi Germany to perform forced labor during World War II. The envelope is shaped as a distinctive, diamond-shaped folded letter ("Spitzbrief"), a common format used during wartime to save paper and resources. The front features a red 12-pfennig German Reich stamp bearing the portrait of Adolf Hitler. It was postmarked in Wanne-Eickel on August 13, 1943. The letter was addressed to Tatiana Gromova. She was living in rural Hesse at Obergasse 1, Frischborn (near Lauterbach), subletting or stationed under the care of a local craftsman named Habermehl ("bei Handw. Habermehl"). The sender is identified as Lydia Kowalewskaja (affectionately called Lida in the text). Her registered address was Hermann-Göring-Straße 55 in the industrial town of Wanne-Eickel (located in the Ruhr region, Westphalia). The Letter content Lida’s Reality Lida writes to her loved ones (Ekaterina Semenovna, Tanichka, and Kolechka). The text provides a poignant, raw glimpse into the survival strategies and emotional toll of forced labor. Lida mentions she has been in Germany for 1 year and 3 months, dating her forced deportation back to approximately May 1942. She notes she has reluctantly accepted her fate. Acts of Small Rebellion: Lida describes wearing a forced labor ID number on her clothing ("рабочую №"). To escape the suffocating atmosphere of the camp on weekends, she describes taking off the numbered badge, climbing over the camp fence, and slipping through a window to go for walks while intentionally evading the camp guards ("вахта"). To preserve her humanity, she admits to leaving work an hour early during the morning shift or hiding in the bathrooms for 20 to 30 minutes just to "live a little" on her own terms. 4043 Used image1944 (29 Sep) Third Reich, Germany, Complete German Temporary Alien's Passport (Vorläufiger Fremdenpass), More Details in Description | This is a complete Germann Temporary Alien's Passport (Vorläufiger Fremdenpass) in WW II. Holder was Georg Werbitzky (also spelled Werbitski), a 16-year-old student born on April 19, 1928. The document explicitly lists his status as stateless (Staatenlos). His place of birth is recorded as Mitrovica (present-day Kosovska Mitrovica, Kosovo), indicating an origin in Southeastern Europe. It is issued on September 9, 1944, by the Police President (Department for Alien Affairs) in Linz, Austria (then part of Nazi Germany's Gau Oberdonau). The issuance of this document to a young, stateless foreign minor in Linz late in the war strongly indicates he was registered under the Nazi regime's system for foreign labor control. The official file number prefix "AEL" on pages 1 and 7 likely points to an Arbeitserziehungslager (Work Education Camp for young adolescents) or a specialized foreign worker registration office. The permit granted a temporary right of residence within Germany until September 1946 but strictly barred him from border zones (Grenzzone) to prevent escape or espionage. Provenance: Ex Werbizky. 4046 Used image1944 (27 Jun) Third Reich, Germany, Multilingual Ostarbeiter-Sparkarte (Eastern Worker Savings Card), Official Nazi Wartime Document for a Civilian Forced Laborer from the Occupied Soviet Territories, More Details in Description | This Lot is a multilingual Ostarbeiter-Sparkarte (Card No. 503126) belonged to a Sowiet forced laborer. It documents her forced labor deployment at the Heeresmunitionsanstalt Altengrabow, a major German army ammunition plant in Saxony-Anhalt, where she was forced to handle hazardous explosives between January 6 and June 27, 1944. During this nearly six-month period, a total of 127 Reichsmarks was deducted from her wages, as verified by the weekly stamps glued inside. As an Ostarbeiter (Eastern Worker) from the occupied Soviet territories, she belonged to the most heavily exploited group of civilian laborers under the Nazi regime. Although the conditions on the back of the card officially promised that the funds would be safely paid out in her local currency after the war, this savings system was actually a deceptive propaganda tool designed to reduce cash circulation in wartime Germany. In reality, the money directly financed the German war economy, and the promised payouts were never realized. Provenance: Ex Werbizky. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
