The classification "R4" identifies Hamburg as belonging to Rayon 4 (postal zone 4) for mail directed toward France. This allowed French postal clerks to calculate the correct distance-based fee. It is addressed to the renowned wine merchant house Schröder, Schÿler & Co. in Bordeaux, a major hub for trade with Hanseatic cities. Dating to early 1816, the letter represents the revival of European trade following the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna. 2675 Used image1830 Prussia, Prephilately, Folded Parcel Accompaniment Letter from Langensalza to Altenburg, Wax Seal | This is a historical parcel accompaniment letter (Paketbegleitbrief) from 1830, used to send a package from Langensalza (Postmark Langensalze January 30th to Altenburg. The letter is addressed to the firm D. Steinbach & Sohn in Altenburg. This was a well-known trading house at the time. The note "fr[ei]her S[ub] Paquet in Leinwand" indicates that the physical parcel was wrapped or sewn into linen. The bold marks H.S. No 63 represent the shipping mark (Signum), which ensured the letter and the parcel could be matched. The weight is recorded in the bottom right corner as "Netto 12 lb" (12 pounds). The circular seal on the left is from the Main Customs Office (Hauptzollamt) of Langensalza, confirming customs clearance. | very fine (Image 1) (Image 2)

2676 Used image1835 - 1850 Folded Letter to Skujene (Latvia), Wax Seal | The letter is addressed to "Pastor Müthel" in Schujen who served as the pastor of Schujen from 1835 to 1870. Schujen is the German name for the town of Skujene in present-day Latvia. At the time this was written, it was part of the Russian Empire's Livonian Governorate. The black ink postmark "Iюня" (June) is written in Cyrillic. Since Schujen was a smaller parish, the letter likely arrived first at a larger regional post office, such as Wenden (Cēsis), before being delivered to the pastorate. Johann Christian Müthel was a notable figure in Baltic-German history. The circular postmark on the right (dated June 3, 1862) belongs to the Thurn and Taxis Post Office in Hamburg.Although Hamburg had its own city post, the Thurn and Taxis dynasty operated its own office there to manage mail heading toward Southern Europe, including Italy, France, and Switzerland. The red framed "P.D." stands for "Payé jusqu'à Destination" (Paid to Destination). This indicated that the sender had paid the full international postage upfront. It has a ransit postmark from Frankfurt (June 4th) on reverse. The other postmark "AMBS. BUREAU" confirms the letter was processed in a mobile railway post office while heading south, likely passing through Switzerland or the Austrian Empire. Arrival in Italy (Novara & Borgosesia) on June 7th. The dates fall within the critical transition period of the Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty, between GB and German Empire wich was signed just two week earlier on July 1st 1890. On July 14th Heligoland was still unter British administration, but everyone on the island knew the handover was imminent. The official handover was on August 10th 1890. This cover represents the final month of the Heligoland's postal independance. 2696 Used image1859 Prussia, German States, Germany, Folded Letter with Prussian Closed Mail Service to the United States, Red Transit and Arrival Postmark | This item from 1859 is a fascinating example of transatlantic postal history. It is a letter sent from Germany to California via Prussian Closed Mail. The folded letter started from Potsdam (Prussia) with departure postmark December 10th. It arrived at the exchange office in Aachen on December 11 (red double-circle stamp "25 ct. Paid"). Aachen was the Prussian exchange office for mail to the USA. The "AACHEN / PAID / 25" postmark is a crucial accounting mark from the Prussian-U.S. Postal Treaty of 1852. It traveled via Belgium and England to catch a British Packet (Cunard Line) steamship. It reached New York on December 30, where it received the red "30 / DEC / 28 / PAID / BR. PKT." arrival postmark. The "30" in the New York postmark indicates the 30-cent rate for a 1/2 ounce letter. Due to the "25ct.Paid" in the red Aachen postmark it means that 5ct kept by Prussia (to cover German inland postage) and 25cent were credited to the United States | very fine (Image 1) (Image 2)
