1941 (Nov.15) Sheard cover with NSW 1d Shield 'GSB' perfin (Government Saving Bank) tied by superb strike of 'RAAF P.O. EVANS HEAD/NSW AUST' datestamp, boxed 'DEPARTMENT OF AIR/CONCESSION POSTAGE RATE' handstamp in violet, addressed, in Sheard's hand, to City Hall, Brisbane, very fine condition.

1948 (Jan.) usage of KGVI 5½d Registration Envelope, uprated for transit to USA with 5/- Robes, 9d Platypus + ½d Roo tied by SYDNEY datestamps, 'Supposed liable to customs duty' & 'Passed/U.S. Customs Bureau' (Chicago) handstamps, on reverse SAN FRANCISCO transit & MACOMB arrival datestamp. Very fine.

An album containing predominantly a WORLD WAR ONE CORRESPONDENCE between Edgar L. Rich, serving on HMAS Sydney, and his "Own darling" Ruby Wilkie, of Washington St., Toorak. In an extensive, articulate and interesting correspondence, Rich describes his experiences on-board, largely during the period that "Sydney" was stationed in the Caribbean as part of the South American Squadron. Later, in 1916, the Sydney and the Melbourne joined the Grand Fleet in the North Sea. A very large percentage of the envelopes still contain their original contents. (60 items).

1915 naval cover to Melbourne with 1d Kangaroo tied by triangular chop, fine 'RECEIVED FROM H.M SHIP/NO CHARGE TO BE RAISED' h/s alongside the stamp, minor damage on opening. The original letter headed "H.M.A.S. Sydney / at Bermuda W.I. / 2 January 1915" accompanies the envelope. "...I see in the morning war news Kitchener says the war will not last long now, and what he says is generally authentic...." (2 items).

During the early stages of WW1 HMAS Sydney was involved in supporting the Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force and escorting the first ANZAC convoy. On 9 November 1914, she defeated the German cruiser SMS Emden at the Battle of Cocos. During 1915 and 1916, Sydney operated on the North America and West Indies Station.

THE GREAT WAR: Series of four Australia Post limited edition albums titled "1914 : The War Begins" [No.205 of 250]; "1915 : Gallipoli" [No.177 of 250]; "1916 : The Western Front" [No.239 of 250]; and, "1917-1918 : The End of War" [No.193 of 200]; each housed in a special black slipcase. Superb.

1915 (Mar.29) use of RP postcard (Warwick Town Hall) with ½d Roo + KGV 1d Reds (2) tied by WARWICK machine cancel and addressed to a POW Officer via the Red Cross in Geneva; with red BRISBANE CENSOR cds (30/3) and red BRISBANE DLO cds (15/4) together with two straight-line UNDELIVERABLE h/stamps, also in red, suggesting the card probably never left Australia.
 

1915 (Mar.23) envelope addressed to Red Cross Geneva with 1d Red KGV, tied by MELBOURNE cds and with red-lettered Censor tape at top and left. Underpaid  and with Hexagonal T10c on face. Has arrival datestamp of Geneva on reverse of 27 IV 15. Violet "185" cachet appears to indicate an POW Camp destination.

 

A comprehensive collection of covers and cards including P.O.W. mails, civilian and military censorship, formular types, letter cards, airmail and surface rate covers, stamped and stampless, some Airgraphs, etc. An accumulation which offers much for the postal historian. (approx 100 items).

QUEENSLAND FIELD POST OFFICES 1941 - 55  range of 32 covers; all but one WWII era. Good range of postmarks & censor marks with many at the concessional 1d rate. CDS cancels include Amberley, Atherton, Babinda, Bundaberg, Cairns North, Cannon Hill, Charters Towers, Clifton, Cooktown, Goondiwindi, Indooroopilly, Innisfail, Maryborough, Mount Garnet, Monto, Petrie Terrace, Ravenshoe, South Johnstone, Strathpine, Toogoolawah, Townsville, Tully, Victoria Point, Wollangarra, Woolloongabba & Yeronga. A few contain original correspondence. A useful assembly.

Imperf 6d green (SG.3, full margins) on 1861 (May 20) part cover to Melbourne, tied by Rays '201' of Rockhampton; on reverse fine Brisbane transit & Melbourne arrival datestamp in red; Cat. from £1900 on cover. [Pays the correct 6d per ½ oz rate to Victoria, introduced on 22 March 1860].
