Mar 28, 1865" cds backstamp on legal-size buff envelope transporting court documents to Delhi, Iowa; opened out for display with some creasing and opening defects, Fine and unique 1¢ franking, prepaying the 20¢ registry fee and overpaying by 1¢ three times the domestic letter rate of 3¢ per ounce.

This is the earliest recorded cover showing the 20¢ registry fee paid with stamps. The 20¢ fee went into effect June 30, 1863, but prepayment of the fee with stamps was not compulsary until July 1, 1867.

The Philadelphia red "R" is known used in 1852-53, so the "10" is not a postal marking but is the registry number. The postage was 3¢, and there was no registry fee at this time.
