A SUPERB COMPLETE SET OF DOROTHY KNAPP HAND-PAINTED OVERRUN NATIONS ISSUE COVERS, ONLY FOUR SETS WERE PRODUCED.

Dorothy Knapp hand-painted cachets on Overrun Nations covers, which we consider some of her finest work, are quite rare and almost never seen as a complete set. McCusker reported being aware of only four sets when we offered this set in the 2005 sale of the Dr. Alfred S. Martin collection.

A CHOICE COVER CARRIED BY THE BICYCLE MAIL ROUTE POST OF CALIFORNIA.

This inter-city service was established during the railroad union strike in 1894 by the Fresno agent for Victor bicycles, Arthur C. Banta. Service commenced on July 6 and was discontinued on July 18 when the strike ended. Only 380 letters were carried during the brief period of operation.

RARE USE OF THE CITY DESPATCH POST ISSUE ON AN OUTBOUND LETTER.

This cover dates from the two-month period (April-May 1842) when letters carried by the City Despatch Post to the mails for delivery outside the city were cancelled in manuscript and received no local post markings. Very few examples (less than six) of the City Despatch Post stamp are known on covers to other cities.

A RARE FIRST LINCOLN INAUGURATION COVER SENT TO A LINCOLN CABINET MEMBER.

This cover was sent by Massachusetts Governor John Andrew who was sworn in Janaury 1861. The cover was addressed to Montgomery Blair, Lincoln's newly appointed Postmaster General. It was likely delivered to the White House, or Blair House.

The 3¢ 1857 Issue was used until about August 1, 1861 when demonetized due to the Civil War.

Nichols was an Assistant Adjutant General, one of those who handled the paperwork of the Civil War. Since his franking privilege on Official Business covered forwarding, the stamp on this cover was not required. He was promoted to Bvt. Brig. General on Sep. 24, 1864 for meritorious and faithful services during the war, and Bvt. Major General on March 13, 1865 for same.
