C.S.A. Catalog; $2,000.

THE ONLY RECORDED CONFEDERATE WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA RAILROAD USE.

This is the Dietz catalog copy and is believed to be unique. The Western North Carolina Railroad originated in Salisbury and in 1861 it terminated a few miles east of Morgantown. The road was incorporated in 1855 and did not begin construction until 1858 so a Set rate would not have been in effect for regular mail until the CSA takeover of the mail system. The addressee, "Gen I S. F. Patterson" was probably Samuel Finley Patterson (1799-1874) who would have been about 62 at the time the war broke out. Since he does not appear on lists of Southern generals, it appears that the title was honorific or perhaps related to some earlier military service.
