Manuscript postmark with matching "Paid 5" rating on cover to Thomas Tainter, Apalachacola, Florida; opening tear affect postmark, ink stain at right, otherwise Very Fine evacuation cover that likely entered the mails at Hart's Road Station, the only recorded Fernandina manuscript use during the Confederate period, ex-Briggs.

A CHOICE CIVIL WAR TRANSATLANTIC COVER SENT FROM CONFEDERATE NEW ORLEANS TO FRANCE USING ADAMS EXPRESS TO CROSS THE LINES.

Letter sent from Albin Rochereau, a merchant and battalion chief in the French Legion, a group of French citizens who were defending the city during the Civil War.

As this cover was taken to New York in another envelope it lacks the typical express markings. Adams Express Company mail was typically put into the US mail system at Louisville, there are examples of mail carried by Adams going to New York.

Benjamin Cudworth Yancey (1817-1891) was a prominent politician and before the war was the minister to the Argentine Republic under Buchanan. Thomas Reade Rootes Cobb, brother of Howell Cobb, was promoted to Brig. Gen. Nov. 1st 1862 and was killed at Fredericksburg Dec. 13th 1862 while defending the "Sunken Road."
