Scott No. 10A; Estimate $750 - 1,000.

A RARE USE OF THE BLUE TROY & NEW YORK STEAM BOAT MARKING ON A STAMPED COVER.

The "Troy & New York Steam Boat" handstamp was used on letters received at Troy from non-contract steamboats carrying mail on the Hudson River. The 2¢ marking indicates the amount charged by the Troy postmaster despite no official justification for assessing this fee, which was discontinued in late 1851.

Scott No. 10A; Estimate $500 - 750.

Use of Plate 5 is not known before July 19, 1851, so this is either an EKU or more likely a very late use of this orange brown plate given no stamps were supplied in the vicinity of this origin. However, it is a sharp impression from an early printing.
