81       imageRhodes & Lusks' (Express). Manuscript express company notation with matching ms. "Charges $1.25", with additional notation at bottom "Collect $2.25" on inbound cover originating with sharp red "So. Wilbraham Mass July 13" cds and matching "Paid" with manuscript "6" prepaid rateing (in effect beginning July 1, 1851) addressed to San Francisco Cal.; edgewear and toning with some separation of front/back, Fine, Genuine Rhodes & Lusks's Express covers are scarce, if not rare, with only five examples recorded in Thomas (four handstamps and this manuscript)..
Estimate; $200 - 300.

Rhodes & Lusk's Express was in operation from March/April, 1852 until Feb 17, 1854. This cover, bearing only a manuscript notation for the fledgling express company, is very likely from 1852.

Rhodes & Lusk's Express had offices in Shasta, Weaverville, Yreka, and Jacksonville (Oregon Territory); thus, it is not clear how this letter got from San Francisco to one of those offices for delivery, but it is likely that it was carried by another (unnamed) express who charged $1.00, making the total $2.25 due upon delivery.
