302     24-S-3 image(Boston, Lowell & Nashua Railroad) Boston, Lowell & Nashua Railroad, North Billerica, Aug 10, 1868. Blue station cds on light buff cover bearing pen canceled 3¢ rose red, F grill (94) and 12¢ black, F grill (97), tied by red "Boston 'Paid 6' Aug" exchange cds to Paris, France, blue Paris (8.22) arrival cds and small red "PD" framed handstamp, Very Fine and scarce transatlantic Station RPO use, Rarity IV.
Towle No. 24-S-3; Estimate $300 - 400.

The Nashua & Lowell Rail Road was completed in 1838 between those two towns. In 1835 the Boston & Lowell Rail Road was completed and commenced passenger services in 1842. In 1857 the two companies, whilst keeping their individual corporate identities, agreed to operate as one railroad.

The contract for the 42 mile Route 603 for the Boston to Nashua in 1865 listed 11 offices to be served on the route. The station recorded as using a Station Agents date stamp was North Billerica located 22 miles north of Boston. The company was paid $6,300 a year for a three times a day service excluding Sundays.

A contract route to Camden on the Ouachita River in Arkansas was not contracted until March 1849, and then only by the trip at $10. The Route 6000m was just under 600 miles and provided a weekly service from New Orleans.
