Dr. Haywood was commissioned a surgeon in the Confederate Army, serving in the surgeon general's office in Raleigh and at military hospitals in and around Richmond. He was one of a group of seven or eight persons who surrendered the city of Raleigh to the Union forces at the close of the Civil War.

Samuel Finley Patterson (1799-1874) was a North Carolina politician, planter, businessman, and member of the prominent Patterson family. He was also a Brigadier General and later a Major General in the state militia and thus became known as General Patterson. (Image1)
