1377 P    WV11R+WV13R, WV12R imageGreat Central Fair, Philadelphia, 1903 Schernikow Reprints, 10c-30c Die Proofs on Proof Paper. Complete representation of all of the three known Schenikow types according to Kantor that includes wide range of colors on proof paper, Crane's green bond, and glazed card for a total of 73 items including twenty 10¢-30¢ se-tenant pairs, overall fresh and Very Fine group that would be extremely difficult to duplicate, ex-Kantor.
Scott No. WV11R+WV13R, WV12R; Estimate $5,000 - 7,500.

These were the reprints prepared from the circa 1863 dies engraved by Butler & Carpenter, which were later purchased at public sale by Ernest Schenikow in 1900, acting in an official capacity for the Hamilton Bank Note and Engraving Co. of New York. These dies along with dies, and rolls for the 1861 issue prepared by Toppan & Carpenter & Co., and various effects of the defunct Philadelphia Bank Note Company were said to have been purchased for $10,000. Unable to find a use for the dies he purchased he then turned to reprinting them and selling them to dealers on Nassau street in order to recover his investment.
