Scott No. 116; Estimate $2,000 - 3,000.

A RARE USE OF THIS SPECIAL EMERGENCY FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR RATE.

After France declared war on July 19th 1870, German forces entered the French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, using their Baden territory as a staging area for troops and supplies. The mass of German activity in Baden obstructed the normal mail route via Ostende and Aachen to Basel. Switzerland organized an alternative temporary route, westbound across France to England. The closed bags went from the Basel exchange office northwest through Paris, crossing the Channel to England from the French port of Calais. The temporary Swiss rate for this emergency service was 80c per 15 grams, 30c (as due rated "30" in red crayon) higher than the 50c rate by the treaty mandated German-Belgian route. As a result, United States mail was surcharged "30" centimes.

1198     34LU1 imageCalifornia Penny Post Co., 1855-59, 2¢ black on buff. Printed frank with instructions for users and additional "Circular" at top right, reverse with partial "HELD FOR POSTAGE" in large block letters and "San Francisco Cal. Aug. 23" cds, bearing four uncanceled 3¢ dull red (11A) singles, addressed to the Postmaster, Mt. Ophir, Mariposa Co. Cal.; docketed "Recd 17 Oct 1855" at left; some wear and wrinkles with light left corner stains, right 3¢ moved to show imprint, Fine, with 1976 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 34LU1; $9,000.

AN EXTREMELY RARE COMBINATION OF THE CALIFORNIA PENNY POST 2¢ FRANK AND 3¢ 1851 ISSUE, THIS BEING THE ONLY RECORDED 2¢ FRANK WITH THE "CIRCULAR" IMPRINT.

This inter-city express and local post operated for about one year in 1855 and 1856. Examples of its 2¢ printed envelopes that paid the rate for delivery to the post office are extremely rare (six reported in Lyons census in July 2005 Penny Post). In this instance, it appears that the letter was placed in the San Francisco post office without a 3¢ stamp as required on inter-city Penny Post mail. The post office marked the letter "Held for Postage".
