Paris to Baltimore, concerning a transatlantic estate settlement,
bearing clear red "CHAMBRE DES DÉPUTÉS / POSTES" (23 Jan), boxed
"P.P.," manuscript "Par le Havre" and New York Ship (16 Mar) entry,
addressed to Dr Jean-Jacques Giraud, manuscript "6" collect on
reverse, enclosed three-page contents, exceptionally fresh and very
fine. The contents concern the settlement of the estate of Félix
Dominique Giraud, whose death in his eighty-fifth year is reported
to his brother, Dr. Jean-Jacques Giraud, a Baltimore physician and
chemist. The writer, Annette Giraud, provides a detailed account of
the arrangements, describing an estate valued at approximately
110,000 francs, the provision of a 400-franc perpetual annuity to
the deceased's longtime housekeeper, and the legal procedures
required to protect the inheritance rights of family members

82 cover   image1839 (August 23), transatlantic folded letter concerning William
Ellery Channing’s abolitionist writings and literary independence,
stampless letter from Paris to Providence, Rhode Island, care of J.
L. Tillinghast, endorsed “Par paquebot du Havre à New York,” with
black Paris (23 Aug) double-circle departure datestamp, faint red
boxed “P.P.” (Port Payé) partly obscured by a brown manuscript
accounting notation and red New-York Ship (18 Oct) datestamp on
front, the reverse with dark red Bureau Maritime/Havre
double-circle exchange handstamp, containing an extensive
cross-written letter from the recipient’s brother, sound with the
usual filing folds and minor edge wear. Written to Miss Rebecca
Tillinghast, the letter records the writer’s engagement with
American anti-slavery literature while living in Paris: “I have
just been reading one of the Channing pamphlets on the Slavery
question, it is a letter to Jonathan Phillips Esq. It interested me
very much, as it was the first time I had ever read any of Dr.
Channing’s works... how exquisitely beautiful are his style &
sentiments.” William Ellery Channing’s 1839 open letter to Jonathan
Phillips addressed the moral degradation of enslavement and the
suppression of free speech. The writer also defends his study and
use of German, asking whether “the attractions of the German tongue
& literature” were not sufficient to encourage his sister to

Genoa, Kingdom of Sardinia, with contents describing the Marseille
cholera epidemic, stampless folded letter sent unpaid via the
Antibes-Nice direct route, struck with black MARSEILLE / 13 OCT. 49
c.d.s., blue oval ROUX FRÈRES DE B. BARTHELEMY / MARSEILLE merchant
cachet and black straight-line VIA DI NIZZA entry marking, the
reverse with Antibes transit c.d.s. (14 Oct) and large red
three-line GENOVA / 16. OTT. / 1849 receiver, assessed at the
second weight step and charged 16 soldi due on arrival, quite
fresh, and with interesting historical contents. Addressed poste
restante to Giuseppe Raffo, influential minister to the Bey of
Tunis, the letter discusses bills of exchange totalling 30,000
francs and acknowledges Raffo’s arrival in Genoa aboard the
Tunisian warship Minos; the writers also describe the contemporary

York, with extensive French railway and Emir Abdelkader contents,
prepaid and carried via the Paris–Calais travelling post office and
Liverpool by Cunard Line Arabia to Boston, arriving 14 Sep and
forwarded through New York to Big Flats, Chemung County, bearing
red boxed “P.P.,” Paris à Calais (26 Aug) railway datestamp on
reverse, Boston (14 Sep) oval “NEW YORK POST OFFICE / ADVERTISED”
handstamp denoting that it remained unclaimed and was advertised
before delivery, light wrinkles, else fine and attractive. Writing
shortly after returning to France, Sarah L. Martial describes her
journey from Paris to Nantes as “the pleasantest Period I ever had
on the Cars,” praising coaches “cushioned like your nice arm chair”
and declaring that “No private Carriages in America are superior to
them” and that “no railroads or Depots can equal them of France.”
She also recalls seeing at Amboise “the Chateau where Abdel Kader
was confined so long,” referring to Emir Abdelkader, the Algerian
resistance leader held there with members of his household from

Sep) transit and arrival datestamps, minor upper-right edge wear,
otherwise very fine. Written from the Eiffel Tower during the 1889

the exhibition, writing "My heartfelt greetings to you, which I
send to you and the children from the top of the Tower... The view

study of Chargeurs Réunis "Ligne L" maritime markings, specialized
group documenting the Bordeaux-Matadi service during a period of
major expansion; beginning with a scarce 1890 official Chargeurs
Réunis itinerary outlining the approximately 25-day passage from Le
Havre to the Congo, various markings noting the larger octagonal
paquebot cancellations introduced under the 1908 contract, notably
MATADI A BORDEAUX / L.L. No. 3 of the Afrique and a choice BORDEAUX
A MATADI / L.L. No. 1 strike from May 1908, the inaugural month of
the reorganized service, the covers showing frankings from across
the West African coast including Ivory Coast, Dahomey and French
Guinea, including a 1908 military usage redirected to a lieutenant
of the 1er Régiment de Tirailleurs Sénégalais at St. Louis, a
desirable and mostly fine-very fine study. Founded in 1872, the
Compagnie Française de Navigation à Vapeur Chargeurs Réunis,
identified by the distinctive red star on its funnels, became a
