straight-line “SHIP” and manuscript “2” rating, endorsed “To the
care of Wm Carrol U.S. Consul. St. Helena,” with a heavily deleted
directive apparently reading “To be left at Simons Bay Cape of Good
Hope,” the reverse docketed “Forwarded from St. Helena with
pleasure, by Your Respectfully W. Carrol U.S. Consul & Agent,” fold
reinforcements with archival tape and faint toning, else a fine
letter regarding the whaling ship Sarah Frances. Datelined Simon’s
Bay, June 28, 1838, the letter documents journey of the 301-ton
Fairhaven whaler Sarah Frances and the consular forwarding
arrangement. Preparing to sail for the western coast of New
Holland, Captain Arthur Cox writes: “I have now got all onboard &
shall sail the first wind for the west Coast of New Holland & I
hope to obtain a cargo of oil this next season.” He describes the
expense of obtaining stores at the Cape and the personal strain of
the voyage: “I have got quite home sick & am very anxious to see
you & my Dear children…all my wish is to make you & our little

49 cover   image1851 (October 21), Eighth Xhosa War, military cover from Cape Town,
signed by Lieutenant-Colonel John Fordyce shortly before his death
in action, envelope marked “Prepaid” at upper left and addressed to
George Forbes Esq., signed at lower left by Lieutenant-Colonel John
Fordyce of the 74th (Highland) Regiment, with partially struck
double-oval GENERAL POST OFFICE / CAPE TOWN Crown cachet and with
manuscript 1/- packet rate, the reverse with Cape Town despatch (21
Oct) and Edinburgh arrival (22 Dec), likely carried on the General
Screw Steam Shipping Co. vessel Propontis, which departed the Cape
on the date of postmark, some light wear, else fine.
Lieutenant-Colonel John Fordyce, commanding the 74th Highlanders,
had arrived at the Cape in 1851 as part of the British
reinforcement effort and was killed in action at the Waterkloof on
November 6, 1851, only a little over two weeks after this letter
was posted. The 74th played an active role in operations against
Xhosa and Khoikhoi forces during the campaign. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Cuba, to Baltimore, Maryland, addressed to Capt. Henry Dashiell,
bearing brown Havana (29 May) datestamp and manuscript 14½c rate,
comprising the 2c ship fee and 12½c inland postage to Baltimore,
reverse with some contemporary docketing, light uniform aging,
folds and vertical tear reinforced with archival tape, clear of the
principal address, markings and complete contents, else fine.
Writing from Havana, the sender expresses concern about commercial
markets, and finding himself in poor health, writes “I will sell
the schooner let the sacrifice be ever so great as I am nearly wore
out,” reporting that “I can get seven thousand dollars any minute I
say the word” and expressing his intention to “lose no time in
getting home once more if please God.” The recipient, Captain Henry
Dashiell (1769-1830) was a prominent Baltimore sea captain who
served as a defender of Fort McHenry in September 1814 and

56 cover   image1837 (April 18), stampless folded letter from Havana, Cuba, to
Boston, Massachusetts, addressed to Miss A. G. Cunningham, with
bold red semi-circular “SHIP / 6” handstamp denoting the 6c
statutory charge on an incoming ship letter delivered at the port
of entry, including the 2c shipmaster’s fee, carried privately from
Havana to Boston, light toning, else fine. The enclosed
correspondence from John Cunningham to his sister Nancy concerns
American expatriate life in colonial Cuba during the 19th century,
describing Havana and Matanzas just before the Panic of 1837,
detailing his stay at Madam La Martiniere’s elite boarding house
(the former palace of the Marquess of Cárdenas), and providing an
overall broad narrative, including a sharp critique of local
architecture ("very high, narrow streets, a court inside") to an
eye-witness account of public musical life, explicitly describing
an evening performance in the great square of pieces from Rossini’s
Norma and Rossini's Moses in Egypt, complete with commentary on the
musical depiction of the "Jews in slavery." He describes his
father’s severe hardships ("obliged to sleep on hard beds, to eat
miserable stuff"), and notes that walking through the streets he

Havana to Paris, privately forwarded via New York, with contents
concerning the Panic of 1857, 63-gram stampless folded letter
privately conveyed from Havana to New York by Spanish merchant
Bartolomé Blanco, whose red oval forwarding cachet is struck on
reverse, entering the United States mails unpaid with New York
exchange-office c.d.s. (3 Nov) and manuscript “27” debit to France,
representing nine times the 3c American inland share, carried by
British packet with “ET. UNIS SERV. BR. A.C. / L” French entry
datestamp (17 Nov), charged 7f20 upon delivery, representing nine
times the 8-décime convention rate, horizontal fold and some
creasing, else fine, an exceptional high-weight usage. The enclosed
Spanish-language letter discusses the economic uncertainty of the
period, referring directly to the “financial crisis of the
neighboring States,” the Panic of 1857, and describing the
resulting stagnation in Caribbean commerce, together with

and Žamberk, Bohemia, to Kadett and engineer Karel Toman of
Austro-Hungarian Infantry Regiment No. 91, held at Niš, Serbia, and
later on Asinara, Sardinia, twenty five cards, comprising
Austro-Hungarian field-post cards and Red Cross formulas with red
triangular “K.K. GEMEINS. ZENSUR-ABTEILUNG WIEN” cachets, Italian
“CENSURA PRIGIONIERI DI GUERRA” handstamps and I Reparto markings
of Campo Perdu and Cala Reale, together with Königgrätz, Hannsdorf,
Praha, Královské Vinohrady, Žižkov and Žamberk postmarks, the
German and Czech messages intact and legible, usual wear, a fine
group. The holding follows Toman’s captivity from Niš through the
evacuation of Central Powers prisoners following Serbia’s defeat in
late 1915 and their transfer to Asinara, where overcrowding,
inadequate supplies and disease caused severe hardship among the
prisoners transported there. Written principally by Marie Tomanová
and Kary Jankovsky, the cards convey the family’s anxiety: “Since
May 22nd we have no proper news from you, we live in constant
fear,” and “How sad it is that you must spend a third Christmas
away from us, and unfortunately we spent the first one without our
deeply beloved, good father.” News of friends and fellow soldiers
is also shared: “Vítal and Vávra are in Italy…Mareček is a
prisoner…Jindra sends his regards.” One later card conveys the
family's hope “that the suffering will end soon…and that we will
