Joachim Corradi & Co. provides a contemporary report on the
olive-oil trade, discussing prices in Grasse and Cannes, where some
houses were offering oil at 68–69 francs, while merchants in Nice

onward via England and Liverpool aboard the Cunard America,
entering the United States at Boston with bold black BOSTON / N.B.
/ PKT. / 5 / JAN 11 arrival c.d.s. and 5c inland postage due, the
reverse with black double-octagon PARIS A CALAIS / 4 / 26 / DEC. /
55 T.P.O. transit, clean with minor edge wear. The correspondence
from John Ward Jr. to his aunt, the American miniature painter Anne
Hall, records his artistic and architectural observations while
travelling in Genoa. Ward describes works seen in the Palazzo
Brignole-Sale, including paintings by Van Dyck and Guercino, the
richly decorated Church of the Annunziata, and the marble, gilt and
lapis-lazuli interior of the Palazzo Serra, which he notes had cost
1,300,000 francs, and also records attending Verdi’s Luisa Miller

places, else fine, an interesting letter providing a detailed
account of Florence’s scientific, artistic and social life. The
writer comments upon his visit to the Royal Anatomical Wax Museum,
La Specola, where he describes the remarkable anatomical models and
the celebrated seventeenth-century plague compositions of Gaetano
Giulio Zumbo, finding the realism both striking and disturbing. He
also remarks upon Florentine street customs and begging practices,
describes the cost of his rooms and household arrangements, and

archive from Italy and the front to Pekisko, Alberta, with covers
and extensive front-line contents, comprising 1916 (April 26)
censored cover from Sala Baganza, Parma, franked at 25c and tied by
clear SALA BAGANZA double-ring c.d.s., with boxed GENOVA POSTA
ESTERA / CENSURA handstamp and High River, Alberta receiver (27
May), accompanied by a six-page letter; 1916 (April 10) censored
cover from the Italian front, franked with 20c and 5c adhesives
tied by POSTA MILITARE / CORPO D’ARMATA c.d.s., sealed with
VERIFICATO PER CENSURA (56) strip and showing partial High River
arrival, accompanied by a three-page letter from a
mountain-artillery unit; and 1916 (March 3) three-page letter from
Cesare Fedeli at Belluno, without cover, describing the military
status of several members of the family, typical faults for
military mail, but desirable wartime contents. The letters were
sent to members of the Fedeli family living near Pekisko, in the
ranching district of southern Alberta, while relatives in Italy
were being drawn progressively into military service. One
front-line letter from a 35th Division mountain-artillery unit
describes aerial combat, trench work and the strain of campaigning
in the Alpine theatre, while Cesare Fedeli’s Belluno correspondence
records the differing military obligations of the family as younger

Day contents from Naples, envelope endorsed O.A.S., bearing British
military censor cachet on front and indistinct circular datestamp
on reverse, arriving Tunis (28 May) where a Tunisia 1fr green
postage due adhesive was applied and tied by TUNIS / R.P.
cancellation, with manuscript 11 notation in red; tiny faults at
top and small portions missing from backflap, the enclosed six-page
letter fresh and legible. Written from Naples by a serviceman named
Joe to his “Jeannine chérie” only two weeks after V-E Day, the
letter includes crude comments on local celebrations, describing
Italians as “macaronis” who “celebrated as if they had beaten the
whole world by themselves,” while contrasting this with what he
regarded as the “extreme sobriety” of the British Army on Victory
Day. The letter also records mundane frustrations of service, and

from Germany, patriotic World War I postcard from Eberspoint,
postmarked with clear despatch c.d.s., violet Tsuruga transit (7
Feb), and large violet camp censor's handstamp, some edge wear and
light toning, but an uncommon incoming card following the fall of
Tsingtao, particularly unusual given the military nature of the
message. The sender, the recipient's brother, serving with the
Second Infantry Regiment of the 4th Reserve Company, makes several
remarks regarding his activities on the Western Front, noting "I
have now arrived in France...we have already covered about 20
kilometers today and have now reached our quarters...on August 15,
we have already been engaged in heavy fighting, hopefully it will

235 cover   image1917, Matsuyama Prisoner of War Camp, censored postcard to Germany,
posted to Dusseldorf by a German soldier imprisoned following the
fall of Tsingtao, with oval and framed violet camp handstamps,
usual edge wear for such mail, a fine POW card. The Matsuyama
Prisoner-of-War Camp was a small Japanese detention camp located in
Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, which held German and Austro-Hungarian
POWs captured during the early stages of World War I, primarily
naval personnel taken after actions in the Pacific. The sender
notes that he received parcels of biscuits and cigars, and that "a

MATADI A BORDEAUX / L.L. No. 2 datestamp (27 May), endorsed “via
Bordeaux par paquebot ‘Formosa’” at upper left, the reverse with
Bordeaux arrival c.d.s. (7 Jun), an unusual Liberian usage.
Although the route was normally operated by its designated contract
vessels, this sailing was undertaken by the S.G.T.M. steamer
Formosa in place of the disabled Tchad. Liberian mail bearing
