Shakspeare" indicating carriage by the Black Ball Line packet ship, routed via forwarding agents Rathbone Brothers & Co., Liverpool, manuscript "1/4½" pre-paid single British packet rate, faint red "2/9" initial double-rate miscalculation corrected by large manuscript "1/9" due from recipient for American transit and Canadian inland carriage, green double split-ring QUEENSTON / U.C. (10 Mar 1837) arrival and red NEW-YORK / SHIP (8 Mar) transit on front, slight fold separations reinforced with glassine hinges sealing a tear along vertical crease at top, else of very fine appearance.

Writing from Scotland, the correspondent describes a widespread influenza epidemic so severe that Sir Robert Peel's banquet was disrupted and "26 workmen" were absent from a single establishment. The recipient, Rev. Mark Young Stark, was a graduate of Glasgow University who became the first Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland in Canada and a driving force behind the establishment of Knox College. 2022 cover   image1837 (June 10), stampless folded entire from Bytown to Quebec, with red 26mm Bytown / U.C. double-circle, manuscript 1/2 rate notation, with extensive contents of local interest regarding lumbering, vertical filing fold, else very fine.

The letter is from timber agent John Porter to his employer James Flintoft. Porter reports a raft detained at Simpsons after a dam gave way, causing the booms and slide to fail, details oak and pine inventory being delivered to Mr. Woods' Booms, and describes the market as "very flat," advising Flintoft to seek counsel from Mr. Gilmour. He notes an inventory of raft tackle left with Mr. Murphy, and that the Buchanan Slide is out of operation due to high water, and that his family has been "very bad with the Measles." 2025 cover   image1850 (June 29), Quebec Citadel officer's prepaid trans-Atlantic folded letter to Bannockburn, Scotland, red manuscript "1/2" currency rate and "1/4 stg" sterling equivalent on front, two faint red circular QUEBEC / L.C. datestamps including a faint crowned PAID AT QUEBEC L.C. mark, carried by Cunard Line Niagara departing Boston (10 Jul) and arriving Liverpool (21 Jul), crisp black STIRLING (22 Jul) arrival double-arc datestamp and partial red wax seal on reverse, file fold, else very fine.

The contents, "Citadel Barracks, Quebec, June 29th, 1850," consist of a letter from Lieutenant and Adjutant H. Mackay of the 79th Regiment of Foot (Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders) to tartan manufacturers William Wilson and Son, requesting "a large handsome Shepherds Plaid of the best quality" with the next regimental supply, payment to be remitted through the Quarter Master or Regimental Agent, and noting that the Regiment "expect to be in Scotland next year"." 2026 cover   image1856 (August 1), Montreal to London, England, first day usage of the new Allan Line rate, bold red Montreal tombstone datestamp, with distinctive red PAID 6d Stg handstamp, officially introduced on this date to indicate the sixpence sterling prepayment for letters carried by Canadian Packets, crisp circular London (15 Aug) arrival mark, some light creasing, but a rare example from the inaugural date of this rate, which marked the implementation of simplified handstamps intended to streamline the mailing process, moving away from the cumbersome accounting of the earlier "Division of Postage" era.
