2364 cover   image1914 (March 4), 2c green Parcel Post postage due cover, on legal-sized cover from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office, to an attorney in Ventura, California, franked with a 2c carmine Washington tied by a Los Angeles, Cal. machine cancel (4 Mar), determined short-paid and marked with a violet "Postage Due 2 Cents" straight-line handstamp, the deficiency collected by the 2c Parcel Post stamp, an unusual use given its intended exclusively for underpaid parcel post packages, uncommonly found on letter mail, some light wrinkles and small stain at upper right, fine-very fine. 2365 cover   imageOccupation of Veracruz, Mexico, 1914 (June 23), Special Delivery cover to New York, franked with 2c Panama Canal and 1911 10c Special Delivery, tied by VERACRUZ, MEX / U.S.M.A.C. duplex, to New York, some small edge tears and fragile along vertical fold, back flap largely removed, but rare; only three Special Delivery covers are recorded from the U.S. Mail Agency at Veracruz.

In 1914, American forces occupied Veracruz, Mexico. On April 25, 1914, the Postmaster General advised the Navy Department that an order had been given to establish a U.S. Mail Agency there. The Superintendent of Railway Mail Service was instructed to take charge, and arrived with his asssitants and stamp supplies in early May. The cover bears no Special Delivery markings, suggesting that it was carried by the regular mail carrier, which was the New York City practice at the time. (Image 1) (Image 2)

(3 Jul), determined upon arrival to be short-paid, initial "Due 14 Cents" struck through and revised to "Due 20 Cents," with the deficiency collected by the application of 10c green Parcel Post Postage Due, and two pairs of 2c deep claret Postage Due, cancelled in Los Angeles, reverse with Nogales, Ariz. transit (6 Jul) and Los Angeles, Cal. arrival (7 Jul) backstamps, some creasing and light edge toning, but the use of the 10c Parcel Post Postage Due being quite unusual. Reuben James to Springfield, Ohio, bearing a violet two-line U.S. Naval Forces, / European Waters handstamp at upper right, manuscript corner card "Leo Fraser / U.S.S. Reuben James" at upper left, some edge creasing, else fine-very fine.

U.S.S. Reuben James (DD-245) was a Clemson-class destroyer commissioned in 1920 and immediately assigned to U.S. Naval Forces in European Waters, where she performed post-war duties including patrol in the Adriatic and Mediterranean and assistance with refugee relief in the Near East. She was later immortalised in song after her sinking in 1941. (Image 1)

2377 cover   image1924 (July 2), registered naval cover from U.S.S. California to Los Angeles, California, on the printed stationery of the Bank of Italy, Los Angeles Branch, franked with a single 12c brown-carmine Washington, tied by oval U.S.S. California c.d.s. (2 Jul), with violet Registered / No. 17 box handstamp, reverse with three U.S.S. California registered transit strikes (2 Jul) and Los Angeles registered arrival backstamp (8 Jul), very fine.

The U.S.S. California was serving as flagship of the Battle Fleet at the time this cover was mailed, the 12c franking correctly paying the 2c domestic letter rate plus the 10c registration fee. She was sunk at Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec 1941 by two torpedoes and a bomb, with the loss of 100 crew members. (Image 1) (Image 2)

2380 cover   image1931 (January 3), pilot signed First Transatlantic Commercial Flight, New York-Paris, 1c Jefferson postal card from East Orange, New Jersey, via Bermuda to the Azores, outbound leg tied by East Orange, N.J. machine cancellation (3 Jan), onward leg franked with a Bermuda ½d green Ship adhesive tied by St. Georges, Bermuda c.d.s. (8 Jan), face with green illustrated cachets depicting pilots MacLaren and Mrs. Beryl Hart and their projected route, reverse with two Hamilton, Bermuda slogan machine marks (8 Jan) and typewritten message hand-signed by MacLaren (AAMC #1145), Bermuda stamp affixed slightly overtop of card, very fine.

MacLaren's signed message to publisher A. C. Roessler states that the final jump to Paris would be "easy"; the seaplane vanished over the Atlantic on 10 Jan 1931. This card was among the mail offloaded in Bermuda before the final takeoff. (Image 1) (Image 2)
