2261 cover   image1944 (November 29), registered cover from the Praga district of Warsaw to the International Red Cross, Geneva, franked on reverse with a block of four 50gr Grunwald (Lublin Issue) tied by Warszawa C c.d.s. (29 Nov), manuscript registration "Warszawa 16 No. 1034," with Ankara transit (12 Mar 1945), Egyptian Censorship tape and circular Dept / 32 censor strikes, and Genève 1 Dis arrival (15 May 1945), very fine and scarce.

The cover was mailed from Praga while the rest of Warsaw remained under German occupation across the Vistula River; direct mail routes to Switzerland being severed by the front lines, the cover travelled through the Soviet Union to Turkey, then through Egypt, arriving in Geneva one week after the formal end of the war in Europe, a five-month journey having traveled "The Long Way Round." Martins c/o Messrs Bohsem, Wulff & Co, the address line "By the Chief Civil Secretary" struck through in blue, circular blue "Passed Censor / C.17 / 16.1.16" handstamp on front, reverse with bilingual censor seal and oval CHIEF CENSOR / CAPETOWN handstamp alongside Windhoek c.d.s. receiver (21 Feb) the address still designating German South West Africa, a most unusual wartime usage, very fine; ex "Claremont".

The address of this cover is of particular note, as German South West Africa fell on July 9, 1915, when German forces surrendered unconditionally to the South African Union Defence Force at Khorab. (Image 1) (Image 2)
