2202 cover   image1871 (February 20), cover from Segowlee to London, England, franked with a single 1866 6a 8p slate, tied by "124" Segowlee duplex cancellation, manuscript "via Southampton" and "Stamped as 6/8" at upper left, envelope flap and enclosed eight-page letter both with embossed purple and blue 4th Bengal Cavalry crest showing crown, crossed carbines, and "B.C. Scinde" scroll, reverse with blue octagonal Tirhoot transit (21 Feb), red circular Ex Bombay transit (24 Feb), and red London / Paid arrival on front (24 Mar),some toning, else fine.

The letter is from C. E. Harenc of the 4th Bengal Cavalry, stationed at Segowlee near the Nepalese border, to his mother in Kensington. Harenc reports his recent election to the Junior United Service Club, noting that the entrance fee of 380 Rupees "swamped all my ready money," preventing him from clearing his brother Herbert's debts. "Rue d'Enfer" ("Street of Hell") is one of the oldest streets in Paris, dating to medieval times; while the name is likely a corruption of the Latin "via inferior" ("lower road"), its proximity to the Paris Catacombs, whose principal entrance is nearby, lends a certain colour to the "hellish" association.
