Feldpost c.d.s. in black, fresh and very fine; the LZ-98 was commissioned on 28 April 1916, and was active in raids over England, reconnaissance in the East, and Western Front operations until decommissioning in July 1917. 163 CVR   imageLZ 99, 1917, feldpost envelope from the Tønder naval Zeppelin base to Berlin, endorsed Feldpost and struck with a fine red circular "Kommando – V. Marine Luftschiff-Trupp Tondern" cachet alongside violet manuscript, the reverse bearing the sender’s designation “R. Westphal, Ob. Maschinist, Marine-Luftschiff L.54, Tondern,” identifying him as a senior machinist aboard the LZ 99, fresh and very fine; LZ 99, commissioned 13 August 1917 and active in reconnaissance and attack roles from Tønder, was destroyed less than a year later on 19 July 1918 when British aircraft carried out the famed Tondern Raid, the world’s first successful carrier-launched airstrike. 164 CVR   imageLZ 103, 1917 (March 11), picture postcard from Trier to Plauen, cancelled by Trier c.d.s. with a violet unit cachet alongside, the card a view of the Hauptmarkt at Trier, written the previous day (10 March) and addressed to Plauen, the sender’s manuscript details at upper left giving rank and surname, apparently reading “Oblt. [Lindhorst?], per Luftschiffe,” identifying the writer as an airship officer, fresh and very fine; the LZ-103, commissioned 16 August 1916 and employed chiefly in attack operations on the Western Front, crashed at Königsberg on 14 August 1917, ending an active service life of only one year. 165 CVR   imageLZ 111, 1917 (April 29), picture postcard from Berlin, crew-mailed feldpost, struck with a clear violet circular Luftschiff Kommando L.Z.111 / Briefstempel alongside a Berlin c.d.s., the sender identifying himself in the upper margin as “Absender: … Luftschiffkommando L.Z.111” and signing the message “Theodor,” likely crewman or officer Theodor Hartmann (or Heimann) attached to the Zeppelin command of L.Z.111, trivial edge wear, else very fine; the L.Z.111, which completed no operational flights for the Army and was transferred to the Navy in the summer of 1917 for reconnaissance over the Ostsee, survived barely seven months before crashing at Dresden on 1 August 1917. 166 CVR   imageLZ 113, 1917 (April 30), officer's feldpost cover to Halberstadt, endorsed Feldpost and struck with the circular violet Luftschiff-Kommando L.Z. 113 / Brief-Stempel alongside a clear feldpost c.d.s., the reverse bearing the sender’s manuscript “Oblt. Kadler, Obflpm. L.Z. 113,” an officer attached to the Zeppelin, a choice strike of this Zeppelin handstamp on a remarkably fresh cover1, ; the LZ 113, placed into service on 22 February 1917 and completing no operational army flights before its transfer to the navy in May 1917 for reconnaissance duties over the Ostsee, was handed over to France after the war in October 1920, where it made several unsuccessful flights prior to crashing. [Schiller?], Marine-Luftschiff-Abteilung Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel,” sent from the Imperial Navy Zeppelin detachment at this early operating base prior to the establishment of Nordholz, fresh and very fine, a scarce early-war Zeppelin-related 1914 example from the formative months of German naval airship operations. Peterson, K. Marine,” the reverse with intact red wax seal, very fine; Peterson, then serving with the naval Zeppelin detachment at Norden, would later become commander of the naval airship L-32, shot down and destroyed during a raid over London on 24 September 1916 by 2nd Lt. 173 CVR   imageSchütte-Lanz SL 11, 1916 (September 3), genuine Zeppelin relic from the “Cuffley Zeppelin,” a piece of aluminium wire mounted to the original British Red Cross souvenir card printed with red cross and legend This is a piece of genuine Zeppelin wire, from the first Zeppelin brought down at Cuffley in Essex, Sept. 3rd 1916. Given by H.M. War Office exclusively to the British Red Cross Society, the War Office–issued card part of an official fundraising effort commemorating the destruction of SL 11 by 2nd Lt. William Leefe Robinson VC during the night raid of 3 September 1916, fresh and very fine; an authentic wartime souvenir of the first rigid German airship destroyed over Britain, the dramatic fall of the “Cuffley Zeppelin” marking a pivotal moment in the home-front air war and signalling the end of the invincibility myth that had surrounded the night raiders.
