422 CVR   imageO’Donnell, Gladys & Noyes, Blanche Wilcox, 1929 (August 20), dual-signed Women’s National Air Derby cover from Douglas, Arizona, franked with an imperforate block of four 1½c Harding stamps tied by clear duplex cancel, bearing the official purple cachet for the Opening of the Douglas International Airport held in conjunction with the Women’s National Air Derby, the first officially sanctioned transcontinental air race for women, the front neatly signed by Gladys O’Donnell and Blanche Wilcox Noyes, a clean, bright, and well-preserved example, very fine.

Gladys O’Donnell finished second in the Heavy-Plane Class of the 1929 Derby, flying a Travel Air biplane in the inaugural competition from Santa Monica to Cleveland. Blanche Wilcox Noyes, who placed fourth, survived a dramatic in-flight fire near Pecos, Texas, extinguished the flames, repaired her aircraft, and continued on to complete the race. Noyes later achieved national prominence by teaming with Louise Thaden to win the 1936 Bendix Transcontinental Air Race — the first time women had defeated men in a major cross-country contest. A desirable dual-autograph cover associated with two of the most accomplished pilots of the pioneering Women’s Air Derby. (Image 1) (Image 2)

423 CVR   imageRankin, Tex & Holman, Charles “Speed”, 1929 (August 23), National Air Races registered airmail cover, carried on the Portland–Cleveland route and franked with 20c airmail adhesive tied by small black circular handstamp, the front bearing the bold orange diamond-shaped Swan Island Airport cachet dated August 23, 1929 and signed by both Tex Rankin and Charles “Speed” Holman, addressed to Portland, Oregon, the reverse showing the large orange circular National Air Races cachet with Swan Island Airport – August 23 at centre and concentric legends Nine Entries – National Air Races flanked by Portland and Cleveland, together with violet Portland, Oreg. (23 Aug), 1929 and Cleveland, Ohio (25 Aug) datestamps, very fine.

Tex Rankin finished second in the men’s derby of the 1929 Air Derby from Portland to Cleveland, trailing only Ted Wells, while Charles “Speed” Holman, after running strongly in the early stages and holding second at Milwaukee, was forced to retire at Sandusky, Ohio, likely due to engine trouble.
