362 CVR   imageNepalese Courts in Tibet, circa late 1890s, Kerong Court to Kathmandu, Nepal, stampless registered cover, struck with choice ornate seal of the Kerong Court in Tibet, carried by runner to the Nepalese Post Office at Rasuwa, with Sun and Moon c.d.s., one year earlier than the currently documented earliest recorded date, very fine examples of these scarce strikes.

Under the Thapatail Treaty of 1855, Nepalese courts were established in the Tibetan towns of Khasa, Kuti, and Kurong, to handle legal cases involving Nepalese citizens. Mail from these courts was struck with the appropriate court seal, and carried with free-franking privileges by couriers to nearby Nepalese border towns. (Image 1) (Image 2)

364 CVR   image1867 (February 8), 40c orange Napoleon III on folded letter to Aleppo, Syria, the stamp neatly tied by partial lozenge cancel, struck on arrival with a fine blue "Postes Françaises / d’Alep" handstamp, the 40c paying only the inland/short Levant rate and consequently shortpaid with bold blue crayon due marks applied at Aleppo and transferred to the Ottoman postal system where a pair and a single 20 paras brown Tughra postage dues were affixed on the reverse (one tied by dotted cancel), representing the 60 paras deficiency, Arabic inscription on front reproduces the addressee’s name, added by local postal staff to facilitate delivery, filing folds touching the Ottoman adhesives yet a clean and appealing mixed-franking, fine. Orleans” and rated “Paid 40” in manuscript for carriage to Illinois, enclosing a lengthy four-page letter, written by Ebenezer Bower Bateman while serving as a member of the California Legislature then sitting at San Jose, offering an extraordinary firsthand account of early life in Gold Rush California, with vivid description of the San Francisco fire of May 1850, which destroyed nearly one-third of the city and caused an estimated four million dollars in losses, together with his reflections on the rapid population influx, political disorder, and his own potential candidacy for Congress.
