PACKET / 48 / DEC 4 circular exchange datestamp, carried on the Cunard China, which left Queenstown on 24 November and arrived Boston 4 December, the letter handled under the short-lived post-Civil War system in which gold-based international settlements required a U.S. paper-currency surcharge when converted into inland postage, the Portland “63 IN U.S. NOTES” being a scarce depreciated-currency handstamp, the enclosure containing routine commercial correspondence, trivial filing folds, very fine. 212 CVR   image1872 (March 9), Prince Albert Edward, later King Edward VII, writing from Italy, cover franked with 20c definitive, tied by "231" dotted numeral cancel, c.d.s. alongside and Cadenabbia straight-line, addressed in the hand of the Prince, to Dr. G.V. Poore, physician to the Royal Family, initialled "AE" (Albert Edward" at lower left, imprint of the Prince on flap, small opening tears, else a very fine royal cover.

The Prince of Wales had suffered a near-fatal bout of typhoid fever in December, 1871; a thanksgiving service for his recovery was held at St. Paul's Cathedral on February 27, 1872, not even two weeks prior to this cover being sent. The Prince visited Rome later that month. (Image 1) (Image 2)

220 CVR   image1915 (January 28), British home-front broadside “Possible Air-Craft Raid Over Maidstone,” printed poster (approx. 8.5 × 11 in.) headed Possible Air-Craft Raid Over Maidstone / Caution, issued from the Town Hall with printed signature of W. H. Martin, Mayor, giving early-war civil-defence instructions for residents in the event of a Zeppelin or aeroplane raid, including immediate blackout measures, extinguishing all gas lights, taking shelter in cellars, and awaiting the “all clear” signalled by three further bombs, the reverse bearing an archival note dated 16 September 1948 from the Maidstone Museum and Kent County Archives attesting to the authenticity of the original broadside, a fresh and striking survival of this fragile wartime public notice, produced in the opening months of the Zeppelin air-raid campaign.
