Russo-Japanese War, 1904/1906, exceptional exhibition collection, with earlier military postal history, comprising over 65 items, mostly covers and letters with a few picture postcards, exceptionally detailed and neatly
presented, with cancellations identified and many letters accompanied by full or substantial transcriptions and translations, beginning with earlier Naval Ministry correspondence and First Sino-Japanese War material relating to the 1895 occupations
of Taiwan and Weihaiwei, followed by extensive Russo-Japanese War mail from the First, Second, Third and Fourth Armies, the Yalu River Army, the eastern region of the army occupying Korea, and Sakhalin Island, with numerous divisional cancellations,
notably a 1905 cover bearing the rare Eighth Division First Field Post Office cancellation, the office recorded as operating only from 1 Jan to 1 Feb 1905, with only a handful of examples known, together with an attractive crossed-flags illustrated
cover dated 22 Oct, bearing the rare mail relay office cancellation and containing an account of recent battles and Russian prisoners being sent to Japan, further highlights including a 20 Dec 1904 card from Baron Corvisart, French military attaché,
to the chief interpreter at the French legation in Seoul, an embossed map postcard depicting the theatre of war with a message describing a Nagoya parade celebrating the fall of Ryojun and referring to a death in action, and a 1905 stationery card
reporting “Ryojun … fell on 1st January, so you can imagine how excited we all are,” the naval section particularly engaging, with a Hong Kong-franked 1904 cover from a midshipman aboard HMS Albion to his father in England describing an
encounter with Japanese warships “cleared and ready for action,” including Admiral Togo’s flagship Mikasa, postcards relating to the Dogger Bank incident, an August 1905 card from an officer cadet aboard the Asama reporting that
repairs had been completed and the ship had left port the previous day in search of enemy vessels, and a privately printed 1905 gunji yubin letter card from a carpenter aboard Shikishima, declaring “If the Baltic fleet appears and if they are
really brave enough, we will fight tooth and nail until we have a victory,” generally superior quality for military mail, with some imperfections as expected, a substantial and carefully researched collection whose transcriptions and
translations provide considerable scope for further study, well worth close inspection. (Video) (Image 1)
