Great Britain (Scotland), 1858/1872, Edinburgh “POSTED SINCE … LAST NIGHT” specialized collection of nineteen covers and entires, neatly arranged and extensively annotated on exhibition pages, the early 1858 section
showing circular backstamps in red, red-brown/plum, black and green, various types and stamper codes, used with receiving-office cancellations including Duke Street, Nicholson Street and Pitt Street, as well as Edinburgh “131” rollers, continuing
with duplex cancellations incorporating “10 LAST NIGHT” and “10.30 LAST NIGHT,” principally on 1d red frankings, also postal stationery, condition somewhat mixed, but many clear strikes, generally fine.
The markings identified mail
posted after the previous evening’s closing time. Initially applied as backstamps, with the adhesives cancelled separately, the inscription was subsequently incorporated into duplex cancellers, the collection tracing this development through
receiving-office usages, ink colours and cancellation types. (Image 1)
