Offices in Bulgaria, 1872 (August 21), uprated postal stationery envelope from Rustschuk to London, 10 soldi blue envelope additionally franked with 1867 3 soldi green, two singles, and 10 soldi blue, three singles,
paying the 46 soldi double rate, cancelled and tied by black “Rustschuk” c.d.s. strikes (Tchilinghirian fig. 886), red “PD” and London Paid arrival (26 Aug) on front, addressed to J. Ryder Mowatt at 74 Upper Gloucester Place, with manuscript despatch
and receipt notations, reverse with annotation referring to Livingstone, Sir Samuel Baker and African exploration, some toning and edge wear, one 10 soldi adhesive with a minor perf fault, but a rare and attractive franking; with 2014 Gregory Todd
AIEP certificate. (Mi. 2, 4).
The address provides an interesting connection to James Mowatt, the barrister and geographical enthusiast elected to the Royal Geographical Society in 1871, whose membership entry records 74 Upper
Gloucester Place. His father, James Ryder Mowatt, formerly secretary of the Great Northern Railway, was the probable recipient. The annotation on reverse begins “Talking of Livingstone & Africa,” mentions Sir Samuel Baker, and records “much
interesting talk” concerning “the discoveries,” subjects that were no doubt of interest to James Mowatt. (Image 1)

FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY WARS - AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE TWO-LINE MARTINIQUE HANDSTAMP
1801 (February 1), stampless soldier’s entire letter from Barbados via Martinique to Ireland, written by Private Simon
Prior of the 2nd Battalion, 68th Regiment, to his brother Tom, with manuscript “1” concessionary rate and straight-line “BARBADOES” handstamp on front, reverse endorsed “Soldier’s Letter” and countersigned by Major Alex Hamilton, with a clear strike
of the exceptionally rare two-line “MARTINIQUE / FEB16 01” handstamp, carried via Martinique to connect with the packet for England, Dublin arrival (8 Apr) and manuscript receipt notation of the following day, some light aging, but an extremely rare
early military letter; ex Gerald Sattin, "Soldiers Rates of the British Empire to 1898", Spink London, May 2004.
Writing from hospital shortly after his arrival on January 27, Prior reports that he is recovering from “flux,” but fears
for Captain Armstrong and 600 men whose portion of the fleet has yet to arrive. He describes Armstrong’s generosity in supplying provisions for the voyage and urgently appeals to his brother to purchase him an officer’s commission, observing that
officers suffering ill health in the island would sell their commissions more cheaply than those stationed in England or Ireland. His plea is particularly poignant: “I dread the hardships of a private soldier in this unwholesome Island will prove
fatal to me if not speedily relieved,” signing himself “your ever loveing tho at present very disconsolate Brother.” (Image 1)

1852 (December 10), "Paid at Barbadoes" stampless folded letter to Philadelphia via St. Thomas and New York, with contents concerning the Haynes family and the disposal of a plantation estate, endorsed “p Steamer,” with
red crowned “PAID AT BARBADOES” handstamp and manuscript “1/-” prepaid rating, overstruck by a clear black circular “STEAMSHIP / 10” marking indicating 10c due, reverse with “BARBADOES” 10 Dec double-arc dispatch and faint St. Thomas 20 Dec transit,
fine-very fine.
Datelined December 3, 1852, the contents include a genealogical record of the birth dates of six children of the Haynes planter family, followed by correspondence from Edward H. Evesley to the Reverend Hinds concerning
the settlement of family plantation interests. The writer discusses distributions of funds, the assignment of debts and the protection of capital, urging the sale of the “Fairies” plantation and conversion of the landed assets into cash, providing
detailed material for the study of Caribbean family history and plantation estate administration. (Image 1)
