1778 (June 18), American Revolutionary War stampless letter from Antigua to Wells, Somerset, from William Farley to Clement Tudway, Member of Parliament, with important contents concerning the loss of America and
its consequences for West Indian plantations, endorsed “p favour of Capt. French,” struck with a bold “SHIP-LRE” handstamp (London Outport, Type S34), manuscript “In all 8” rating comprising 1d ship letter, 3d inland postage to London and 4d

value to us,” and that simultaneous war with France and America would prevent supplies arriving in unescorted ships, concluding, “I think the whole British Empire is reduced to a shocking situation.” (Image 1)

1843 (February 14), stampless ship letter from Hobart Town to London, with partially printed contents datelined “Van Diemen’s Land, Hobart Town,” postmarked at the General Post Office in Hobart and struck with a red 14
Feb Crowned Circle, carried aboard the Janet Izal and landed in the English Channel by the vessel’s boat or a pilot boat, entering the mails with a black framed step-type SHIP LETTER / BRIGHTON handstamp (Type S5, recorded from
1821/1843), rated 8d in manuscript and forwarded to London, with 13 Jun morning-duty backstamp, light filing folds, scarce and fine.
Before the 1840 postal reforms, such mail would have qualified as an India Letter; the subsequent
abolition of the distinction between India Letters and Ship Letters permitted mail carried by private vessels not under Post Office contract to travel anywhere within the United Kingdom at the uniform rate of 8d per ½oz. Marked as a "duplicate", the
letter enclosed £300 in Treasury bills from the Derwent Bank, representing six months’ income from Sir George Best Robinson’s investments. (Image 1)
