1930 (August 8), wreck cover from Wellington to New York salvaged from the sinking of the S.S. Tahiti, struck with Wellington slogan cancellation and three-line violet "Salvaged from / S.S. Tahiti / Lost at sea,", the
reverse with San Francisco (1 Sep) double-circle c.d.s. and an embossed Union Bank of Australia imprint on the flap, the salvage cachet faint as usually found, having been applied at San Francisco while the recovered mail remained damp, some creasing
and ink transfer as expected, but a fine wreck cover.
Bound from New Zealand for Rarotonga and San Francisco, the Union Steamship Company’s S.S. Tahiti lost her starboard propeller on August 16, 1930, approximately 460 miles from
Rarotonga. The fractured shaft severely damaged the vessel, flooding the engine room and cargo holds. The Norwegian steamer Penybryn stood by until the larger American steamer Ventura arrived, whereupon the passengers and most of the mail were
transferred. Tahiti was abandoned on August 18 and sank later that day. This is one of only two recorded incidents in which mail was recovered from a vessel lost in mid-ocean. (Image 1)
