1796 (April 16), folded letter via Chesterfield Packet to London, with slavery-related contents, endorsed at top Articles of Agreement, double-rated 3/- with p. packet notation at lower left,
carried via Captain Jones of the Chesterfield Packet, landing at Plymouth on June 4, 1796, received in London on June 7, with Bishop mark on reverse, handstruck JAMAICA straightline on back, remarkably fresh and with noteworthy historical contents,
very fine.
The letter provides a detailed account of Jamaican plantation management, including sugar production at Blue Mountain, Grange and Vere amid persistent drought. Its most significant passages concern plans to purchase Dr
Affleck’s enslaved workforce: Jaques proposes obtaining a list of their “Ages & qualifications,” investigating “the strength and capability of the Gang,” and having their value fixed by two independent appraisers. He also considers purchasing
Affleck’s adjoining 600 acres because the enslaved people were “so numerous” that they would require extensive provision grounds. (Image 1)

1823 (June 25), suppression of Caribbean piracy, stampless folded letter, from James McCann to his brother in Greenock, Scotland, with partial contents, ship endorsement at lower left, struck in reverse with two-line
COMMERCIAL ROOMS / KINGSTON JAMAICA handstamp, vertical filing fold, else remarkably fresh, the Commercial Rooms strike being quite strong, an unusual example evidently not handed to the Greenock Ship Letter Office upon arrival, with contents
of exceptional interest.
The letter contains a contemporary account of Caribbean piracy, noting that pirates were “meeting with more opposition” and reporting that “there were 20 Pirates hanged here a few weeks ago...Captain and 19 of
the crew of the Schooner Zaragozana; this ought to be a warning to others.” The pirate schooner Zaragozana was captured off Cuba on March 31, 1823, by boats from H.M.S. Tyne and Thracian, after which her captain, Cayetano Aragonés, and members of his
crew were taken to Port Royal for trial. (Image 1)

1843 (August), stampless naval letter from H.M. Brig “Albatross,” Port Royal, Jamaica, to Portsmouth, redirected to Northampton, from W. H. Anderson to his brother Lieutenant D. Anderson, 83rd Regiment, endorsed “If
gone to be forwarded,” struck with red framed “PACKET LETTER” handstamp, manuscript “1/-” packet rate increased to “1/1” for redirection, carried by the R.M.S.P. Forth, departing Jamaica on 23 Aug and reaching Southampton on 19 September, the
reverse with fine Portsmouth (21 Sep) and next-day Northampton backstamps, some toning, trivial imperfections, a fine naval letter with interesting contents.
Serving aboard the Albatross under Commander Reginald Yorke, Anderson writes,
“I do not much like this Brig, I am sorry to say,” before delivering an unflattering assessment of his shipmates: “The surgeon is a fool & a Goth. The Midm is an ass, the second Midm an idiot.” He also asks his brother to visit Christian &
Co., 7 Wigmore Street, London, and arrange for a dozen pairs of drill trousers to be sent. (Image 1)
