1845 (March 25), Irish National Schools folded letter from Ballymoney to Circleville, Ohio, via Philadelphia and Rushville, written from Greenshields by James Warnock to his former pupil Robert Jno. Black, bearing
Philadelphia (15 May) datestamp, red Rushville (19 May) receiver, manuscript “Forwarded,” blue “25,” additional “10” forwarding rate and underlined “35” total due, overall toning and slight soiling, with archival reinforcement to folds.
Warnock describes his career within Ireland’s developing National School system, including centralized training at the Dublin Model School, examinations by government inspectors and his attainment of the highest professional classification
available to him. He also comments that “Peace prevails in Ireland” amid the political aftermath of Daniel O’Connell’s Repeal campaign and reports on conditions at the Ballymoney poor house, together with the health of local relatives. (Image 1)

1845 (June 24), redirected stampless letter from Dunaghy, County Antrim, to Ohio, with poignant pre-Famine contents, requesting financial assistance, struck with red boxed “PAID AT / BALLYMONEY” and London Paid transit
(26 July), manuscript rate calculations, reverse with blue Ballymoney dispatch c.d.s. (25 July) and further London transit, complete three-page letter, filing folds and some aging, else fine.
John and Jenny Wiley write to their
grandson Robert Black, acknowledging an earlier remittance but urgently requesting further help: “we state the naked truth when we say that it cannot come a moment too soon.” They report that “Mary Charton through necessity had to go to the
poor-house, but was not long there till she died,” and describe their own reliance on community charity: “Hugh Biggart’s people held a dance for us in their barn and lifted a pound nearly for us. That sum was the source of our support up to the
present time. But it is now expended.” (Image 1)
