1853/1869, Edward Hobart Seymour naval correspondence, cover and separate eight-page autograph letter signed "Off Coast of Liberia," comprising an 1853 cover to his father, the Rev. Richard Seymour, at Kinwarton Rectory,
Alcester, endorsed "H.M.S. Terrible" franked with Great Britain 1d red tied by a light Maltese Cross, reverse with red transit datestamp (26 Sep) and Alcester arrival (27 Sep), together with an extensive letter to his mother, signed “E. H.
Seymour,” begun aboard H.M.S. Growler off Liberia on August 29, 1869, and continued at Jellah Coffee on September 12-13, some light soiling and small opening faults to the cover flap, the letter with usual folds, two fine related items from
different stages of Seymour’s naval career, the letter with fascinating contents.
Edward Hobart Seymour, later Admiral of the Fleet, joined H.M.S. Terrible as a midshipman in 1853 and subsequently served aboard her during the Crimean
War; by 1869 he commanded H.M.S. Growler on the West African station. The cover and letter thus represent his correspondence home as a young midshipman and, sixteen years later, as a commanding officer.
The letter describes finding the
wreck of the “Tuscan” near the Plantain Islands, where “she had however fallen over on her beam ends and was evidently a helpless wreck.” Seymour admits taking “some spars & other stores” for alterations to Growler, hoping there would be “no row
about the robbery,” but explaining that he had “for the sake of the ship run the risk.” The account also records a diversion to investigate possible slave trading: he recounts getting up steam to pursue and board a brig which proved “quite innocent
of slave dealings.”
Fever had affected both Seymour and others aboard: “thanks to quinine I am all right again,” but found that “the dulness & monotony of this station I dread much more than the climate.” Further passages discuss
delayed family correspondence, obtaining postage stamps from H.M.S. Fly, and the death of Fly’s Commander (Horatio) Knocker, “a clever man and great naturalist-very much respected and liked.” The letter concludes: “The mail steamer is just coming in
I must therefore end and close my letter.” (Image 1)

1857 (February 6), prepaid cover from London, England, to Montreal, Canada, redirected to an alternate transatlantic packet, franked with 6d Queen Victoria, postmarked London (6 Feb) and Liverpool (7 Feb), carried by the
Cunard steamer Asia on her 55th voyage, departing Liverpool 7 Feb and arriving New York 22 Feb, the 6d sterling postage apparently prepaid for carriage by an Allan Line Canadian packet but, lacking a specific routing instruction and with the
next regular Allan sailing not until 25 Feb, forwarded by the British Post Office on the first available steamer, rated 2½d currency collect at Montreal for the difference between the prepaid Canadian packet rate and the 8d sterling / 10d currency
British packet rate via the United States, with Liverpool accountancy handstamp and Montreal arrival datestamp (24 Feb), a fine and unusual example of supplementary postage resulting from carriage by an alternate packet service; ex Steinhart, mounted
on his album page. (Image 1)
