1847 (July 15), 1s prepaid transatlantic folded letter from London to Nevis, British West Indies, from a merchant house deeply rooted in the slavery-era West Indian economy, addressed to William Ross Esq., Nevis, endorsed
“p Steamer” and “Paid”, rated 1/- in manuscript and struck with London Lombard Street Maltese Cross PAID / L.S / 15 JY 15 / 1847 datestamp, the lengthy letter written by Manning & Anderdon, successors to a commercial network with extensive
ownership, mortgage and agency interests in Caribbean estates during slavery, concerning the Stapleton Estates and the recruitment of Madeiran labourers less than a decade after emancipation, together with passage costs, colonial bounty payments,
contractual obligations and shipments of sugar and rum amid declining prices, faults including tropical foxing chiefly to the exterior, small piece lost from removal of seal, the contents remaining clear and legible.
The
letter'demonstrates the continuity between the slavery-era plantation system and the labour situation following emancipation; William Manning had been a major West India merchant and M.P. with substantial ownership intersts in and agency connections
to Caribbean estates, including Nevis, while his son-in-law John Lavicount Anderdon continued the business through Manning & Anderdon. By 1847, when this letter was sent, they were adapting to a post-slavery economy by importing Madeiran labour
for the Stapleton Estates. The letter records £196 already paid toward the immigrants’ passage, instructions to recover any colonial bounty, and provisions concerning repayment should workers leave the estates prematurely, while in the same
correspondence the merchants discuss sugar and rum shipments and demand “the utmost practicable economy.” (Image 1)
