(29 Aug) with a second strike alongside and Canadian Contingent dated oval (30 Aug) in purple, redirected on arrival with Bracebridge c.d.s. (1 Oct); very fine and rare, a most attractive cover and the only such recorded bearing this combination of postmarks; ex Hart, Bertolaja.

Lord Strathcona's Horse formed, at the time, part of the Third Mounted Brigade, Natal Field Force, with this cover being an example of mail carried via the southern route. (Image 1)

(17 Sept), sent shortly after “D” Battery reached Bronkhorstspruit with General Hamilton’s Division on 15 Aug; and (24 Aug) stampless personalised soldier’s envelope, altered for use by another sender and endorsed “On Active Service, Stamps Not Available”, bearing a fine strike of Army Post Office 50 c.d.s., the Canadian Contingent Type II dated oval in purple and Montreal Free key datestamp (27 Sept), sent while Hamilton’s division was pursuing General Botha’s forces through the Middelburg–Belfast area; a scarce and noteworthy pair illustrating the stages of “D” Battery’s operations in the eastern Transvaal. Ecclestone was the officer commanding the Canadian Postal Corps, a five-man detachment of experienced Canadian postal officials sent to South Africa with the Second Contingent in early 1900. Smith, Artificer, Imperial Light Horse, South Africa,” franked with Cape 1d, partly torn away on opening, tied by partial C.G.H. c.d.s.; and (23 May) Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition envelope, toned and roughly opened at right, franked with Great Britain 1d lilac tied by Army Post Office 43 c.d.s. of Kroonstad, with a light strike of the Canadian Contingent dated oval (30 May) in red; incoming mail from Dartmouth with (3 May) envelope addressed to the 3rd Division, 2nd Canadian Contingent, franked with Canada Queen Victoria 2c carmine pair tied by barred ovals and bearing directional endorsements including “Not at Braamfontein” and “Strathcona Horse”; and (20 Dec.) similar envelope addressed to Smith “Attached 6th Northumberland Fusiliers,” further endorsed “3rd Battn. M.I., Belfast”; all somewhat soiled, an interesting and scarce group documenting Smith’s varied wartime attachments.

The Canadian Government, at the request of the British authorities, recruited, equipped, and transported a group of twenty-three artificers, i.e. skilled craftsmen, to South Africa for service. These recruits included wheelwrights, farriers, collar makers, and saddlers on one-year contracts. They left Halifax on the S.S. "Milwaukee" on February 21, 1900, and disembarked at Cape Town on March 26. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Victorian, Stamps Unavailable, W.V. Law…”, written during the Cape Town stopover and bearing London Paid transit c.d.s. (15 Mar), the reverse with Army Post Office, Cape Town despatch c.d.s. and arrival c.d.s. (24 Mar); and (4 May) stampless envelope from the same correspondence endorsed “Canadian Field Hospital, On Active Service…”, cancelled by Field Post Office 100 c.d.s. (Klerksdorp), partly overstruck by London Paid c.d.s. (31 May), the reverse with arrival c.d.s. (14 Jun); a scarce and attractive pair tracing the unit from its arrival in South Africa to active service in the western Transvaal.

The S.S. Victorian reached Cape Town on February 21, 1902 carrying the Second Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles and No. 10 Canadian Field Hospital; after the troops were revaccinated against smallpox, the vessel continued to Durban, from where the hospital proceeded inland and was later stationed at Klerksdorp during the closing months of the war. (20 Jun.) and arrival c.d.s. (21 Jul.), the reverse with large oval Potchefstroom censor datestamp; also 1902 (June 2) printed envelope of the Klerksdorp Mining Record, publishers of the patriotic postcards, to Potchefstroom bearing G.B. 1d. lilac tied by Field Post Office c.d.s. and circular Klerksdorp Press Censor handstamp, a fine-very fine trio.

No. 10 Canadian Field Hospital accompanied the Third Canadian Contingent to South Africa in February, 1902, serving during the final phase of the conflict as British forces intensified operations against the remaining Boer commandos. Klerksdorp became an important military and medical centre in the western Transvaal, while local publishers, including the Klerksdorp Mining Record, produced patriotic postcards and illustrated stationery eagerly purchased by soldiers and medical personnel for correspondence home. Winifredian's stop at Cape Town while conveying the regiment home to Canada, fine and of great rarity, only two covers from the Fourth Regiment are believed to be recorded; ex Robinson.

The Fourth Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles, formed Canada's Fourth Contingent and saw only brief service in South Africa before the Peace of Vereeniging brought the war to a close on May 31, 1902. The regiment embarked for home aboard the S.S. Winifredian, calling at Cape Town en route, making surviving mail from the return voyage exceptionally scarce. (Image 1)
