567 cover 34 image1889 (July 27), ½c Small Queen on complete copy of "Grip," Toronto’s celebrated journal of humour and caricature, tied on reverse by dotted lozenge cancellation and sent locally within the city, the front cover featuring a political caricature concerning Canada–United States trade and the back cover with attractive Western Assurance Co. advertisement, crease along front cover and some light edge wear, otherwise quite fresh considering the ephemeral nature of the publication, a lovely and scarce illustration of the ½c newspaper rate.

Founded in Toronto in 1873 by cartoonist and editor John Wilson Bengough, Grip was one of nineteenth-century Canada’s most influential satirical journals, inspired in part by Britain’s Punch. (Image 1) (Image 2)
