2 ng 29TCDP imagePre-Production, 15c Large Queen, perforated trial colour plate proof in red brown, on thicker India paper, well centred and showing a rich deep shade, thinned at top with other minor imperfections typical of this delicate paper; nevertheless one of only a very small number of perforated proofs recorded for the Large Queen issue, fine; with 2002 Greene Foundation certificate.

Perforated trial colour proofs of the Large Queen issue are exceptionally scarce. Duckworth records a 12½c brown trial colour plate proof in addition to the 15c offered here; the Brigham Collection contained only a single perforated trial colour plate proof, a 1c in dark blue. Others are recorded in colour of issue. (Image 1) (Image 2)

H.E. & H.W. Duckworth in "the Large Queen Stamps of Canada and Their Use" record thirty 15c plate proofs in colour of issue; multiples are particularly elusive, as most have been cut into singles. (Image 1)

Printing Studies
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
5 O 29/30 imagePrinting Studies, 1860s/70s, 15c Large Queen reference group by Firth type, comprising thirteen used singles, carefully annotated on three pages by the exhibitor as to Firth type, with one each Group I-XIII carefully detailing the characteristics of each, including examples of the scarcer four Montreal types (5, 6, 7, and 8, the last the "very thick" paper), some flaws to be expected including shorter perfs in places, but a useful reference group, chiefly fine. 6 O   imagePrinting Studies, 1868-1902, colour progression by yearly dated cancellations, selection of thirty-three dated examples spanning 1868 through 1902, with every Firth Type from I through XIII represented, together with six examples from the 1895-1902 “remainders,” clearly illustrating the striking evolution of shade from the First Ottawa Printings through the Montreal and Second Ottawa Printings, also including three Group IX colour changelings; an impressive study that would be exceptionally difficult to duplicate, attractively displayed on an exhibit page, the page having been folded but not creasing any stamps, with small imperfections in places, but largely fine, ideal for the specialist; with 2016 Greene Foundation certificate for Sc. 30a. Group I
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
7 O 29b imageGroup I, 29b, 1868 (March 2), 15c purple, the earliest recorded use of a Large Queen, used example struck with a partially legible 2 Mar 1868 datestamp, just over a week after the denomination’s official issue date, one of only two examples known from this date; fine and of exceptional importance for an advanced collection or exhibit.

Duckworth records that "of the several Large Queens, the 15 cent value was issued first (22 February, 1868)." He also notes that two stamps are known cancelled on this date, one clearly from Ottawa, the other noted as possibly from the same; they further conclude that "the earliest use known to us is from Ottawa on March 2 (probably to catch the Cunard liner 'Cuba' which departed New York on Wednesday, March 4)." 14 cover 29b imageGroup II, 29b, 1868 (March 23), 15c purple Large Queen, pre-first day use to England, cover from London, Canada West to London, England, franked with a single 15c (Firth Group I) tied by London C.W. datestamp, paying the 15c per ½oz rate to the United Kingdom via New York, the reverse with Hamilton transit (23 Mar) and London arrival (6 Apr), roughly opened at top and some light ageing, but an exceptionally important early usage, being one of only five recorded covers bearing the 15c Large Queen before 1 April 1868. ex DeVolpi, Firth; with 1982 B.P.A. certificate.

The 15c Large Queen was placed in use ahead of the other denominations to meet the new 15c per ½oz rate to the United Kingdom via New York, which had taken effect on January 16, 1868. Although April 1 is generally regarded as the official first day of use for the Large Queen issue, a small number of 15c stamps were distributed and used earlier. The recorded pre-April 1 covers are dated March 16, March 23 (two examples), March 28 and March 29 1868; off-cover examples are also known dated March 2, 13, 16, and 20.
