LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
767 cover   image1906 (May 8), Territet to Nouméa, New Caledonia, postcard datelined at the Val Mont Sanatorium, franked with 10c Numeral, tied by Caux c.d.s., to Doctor Louis Michel on board the S.S. Pacifique at Nouma, New Caledonia, with choice double-circle Noumea arrival on image side, a very fine card to an exotic and elusive destination.

The SS Pacifique was a vessel of the Messageries Maritimes, a French colonial steamship providing mail and passenger "feeder" service between Nouméa, the New Hebrides, and Sydney. At the time, New Caledonia was strictly managing arrivals due to the plague and smallpox outbreaks in the region; the Docteur Michel to whom this has been addressed may have been involved in quarantine efforts. 769 cover   image1907 (March 24), cover from Zurich to Tunis, Tunisia, mixed issue franking of 5c Numeral with 20c Standing Helvetia, each tied by Zurich 17 (Wipkingen) c.d.s., to Judge P. Randet in Tunis, with partial c.d.s. arrival backstamp, Unicorn and "Meritez" family seal embossed on flap, piece torn from flap, an uncommon destination to a prominent figure of the period.

Paul Randet was a prominent French colonial magistrate who began his judicial service in Tunisia and Algeria, holding various posts between 1907 and 1922. He achieved significant distinction as a Chamber President in the French protectorate of Morocco before moving to Egypt to serve as a judge on the international Mixed Court of Alexandria from 1922 to 1929. 770 cover   image1907 (April 19), Bern and Penang to Kampar, Perak, 5c postal stationery card, uprated with 5c Numeral, tied by Bern despatch c.d.s., addressed in French to Monsieur Alfred Loquet, ingénieur, “Mines d’étains de Kinta,” in Kampar, Perak State, Malaya, with route directive endorsed “via Brindisi + Penang,” with Penang (9 May) c.d.s., Taiping (9 May) squared circle, and next-day Kampar squared circle receiver, light upper right crease, else a very fine and highly unusual Far East destination.

The Kinta tin-mining district of Perak was then one of the world’s great centres of tin production; mail to interior Malaya, and particularly to Kampar addressed to a named mining engineer, is distinctly uncommon. (Image 1) (Image 2)
