Written by C. Dallas to Sir John Doveton on Christmas Eve, the letter congratulates Doveton on his recent knighthood, noting "none in India have ever equaled your routine of services," before turning to the "little uneasiness" caused by the Pindaris, irregular horsemen Dallas characterises as "thieves" numbering "much less than 25,000." He details his command of the Nizam's Contingent, "most carefully equipped in everything" with individual horses selling for "two hundred guineas," asks Doveton to help his younger son Charles find a station in the Bengal Horse Artillery, and closes with a nostalgic hope to one day "break a bottle of wine" with his old friend. 716 cover   imageSardinia, 1859 (September 2), Genova to Naples, Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, folded letter, three-colour franking with imperforate 10c purple-brown, 20c dark ultramarine, and 40c carmine-red Victor Emanuel II, all on medium white wove paper and with mixed margins, all tied by Genova c.d.s. (2 Sep), reverse with Naples arrival (5 Sep), double oval "A.G.D.P." arrival handstamp, manuscript "Col Postale" inscription, and rate mark "16" in manuscript, one horizontal filing crease towards the top not affecting the adhesives, fine to very fine, an attractive and properly franked French Paquebot letter at the 70c single-weight rate (Sc. 11i, 12c var, 13b; Sassone 14Ac, 15Ba, 16Bb); with 2009 Sismondo certificate.

The 70c rate comprised 20c for the Sardinian post and 50c for French maritime transit to Naples; the Neapolitan post then charged the addressee 16 grana, as indicated in manuscript. Both rates were current from January 1858 until October 1860, with the replacement of the French service by the newly established direct Sardinian-Neapolitan route. 720 cover   image1904 (April 22), Ise to Thio, New Caledonia, 4s violet postal stationery card, struck by crisp black circular Japanese datestamp, address typewritten on white paper label pasted over a large-scale hand-brushed Japanese repiquage dedicated to the glory of Japanese soldiers during the Russo-Japanese War, addressed to "L'Inspecteur Japonais" care of La Société Anonyme Le Nickel, Thio, Nouvelle Calédonie, printed "VIA SYDNEY" on address label, with corresponding faint black circular Sydney (5 Jun) transit datestamp on front, printed Japanese kanji message on reverse under the header of the Grand Shrine of Ise dated 2 April 1905, a rare destination, very fine; an unusual example.

The card was sent to the Japanese inspector at the Le Nickel mining company, a firm that imported thousands of Japanese labourers to work the mines at Thi. The text visible beneath the address label includes a dedication to the glory of Japanese soldiers, a reference to the ongoing Russo-Japanese War. (Image 1) (Image 2)
