Cape of Good Hope
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
610 cover   image1843 (July 30), Prisoner at Robben Island, folded letter to Dundee, struck with clear crowned oval GENERAL POST OFFICE / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE handstamp (Jurgens Type 11) in black, manuscript "8" (pence) ship letter rate, reverse with unframed SHIP LETTER in black, red October 27 transit and next-day arrival c.d.s., with complete three-page letter by William Thomson, filing fold, else fine.

Thomson writes to his sister in Dundee confirming he has secured the "paper of my liberty" and expects release on October 8, 1843. Without explicitly stating his crime, his mention of being 2,027 miles further from home than when in Raleigh and his plan to return to England via Liverpool suggests he was a soldier or sailor sentenced to banishment - a common practice for military prisoners held on the island at this time. An exceptional record of this period of Robben Island's history, predating its use as a leper colony and political prison. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
611 cover   image1847 (May 24), Calcutta Steam Letter, Kandy to Calcutta, India, via Galle, stampless cross-written folded letter, struck with faint black circular KANDY / POST PAID (May 25) departure datestamp on reverse and clear boxed CALCUTTA / STEAM LETTER / 1847 June 9, addressed to "Frank Dumont Esq." at Eglinton McClure & Co. with manuscript routing "Per Thames via Galle," very fine.

Written by James Dumont from the Kandy highlands, the five-page letter provides a granular account of colonial coffee planting in mid-19th century Ceylon. Dumont describes a terrifying encounter with "2 buffaloes" that charged his party, leaving his horseman on the ground and Dumont himself with a "trifling shake" after remounting, details having "130 people lopping, piling, burning, weeding, holing and making roads" to prepare 75 acres for the September harvest, and reports that a neighbour, Dundas, was forced to resign after his salary was cut by £100 following a failure at the "drying barbecues."
