Federal Revenues - War Savings
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
549 FWS1-FWS4 DP image1918, War Savings, "Canadians at Ypres" vignette die proofs, on India sunk on a larger card (150mm x 230mm) with manuscript "O.G. 260" on front at bottom right and manuscript "Canada Ypres" in pencil on reverse, quite scarce, and destined for an advanced collection or exhibit, fresh and very fine.

The original from which the proof image was taken, titled "The Canadians at Ypres," was a large-scale oil painting completed in 1915. It depicts a dramatic scene from the Second Battle of Ypres (April 1915), specifically commemorating the moment the Canadian Division held the line against the first poison gas attack in history. The central figure is a Canadian soldier standing amidst the chaos of a battlefield, holding his Ross rifle in one hand and triumphantly waving his cap in the other. By 1918, this image had become one of the most recognizable symbols of Canadian grit and sacrifice. The government chose it for the Thrift Stamp program to create a direct emotional link between "saving pennies" and the "heroism of the boys at the front."

William Barnes Wollen was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and was renowned for his battle scenes. His work was highly sought after by the Canadian War Memorials Fund, and the original painting of the Ypres scene is currently held in the collection of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Regimental Museum in Calgary, Alberta.

550 FWS1 image1918, War Savings, 25c orange, seven examples on Dominion of Canada Thrift Card, 175mm x 194mm card, folded in half vertically as intended, with minor wear typical from use, scarce and desirable, very fine.

The Canada 1918 Thrift Stamp program was a First World War initiative designed to encourage citizens - particularly children - to save small amounts of money to support the war effort. Launched by the National War Savings Committee, it served as a "micro-investment" gateway for people who could not afford to buy more expensive Victory Bonds or War Savings Certificates upfront. As cards were filled, they could be traded up to the next level of savings type. (Image 1) (Image 2)
