Vermilion petroleum labels were designated for domestically produced petroleum; surviving used examples are particularly scarce, as regulations required the labels to be destroyed once the container was emptied, with only a few examples recorded. (Image 1)

460 O FSC30b, FSC31 image1917 (January 22), Exchequer Court of Canada “In Prize” affidavit document, relating to the seizure of the vessel The Oregon, bearing two Federal Supreme Court revenues comprising a $1 Widow Queen Victoria of the 1897 issue overprinted “IN PRIZE” in red and purple and a 1915 George V Supreme Court stamp with double red “IN PRIZE” overprints, affixed to a two-page affidavit, the text noting delays in obtaining further information from Mexico “owing to the political conditions there existing,” the stated catalogue value applying to the used stamps alone, such prize-court documents infrequently encountered, fine to very fine, a superb exhibition piece.

Under the British Prize Court Acts of 1914 and 1915, adopted by the Privy Council of Canada in 1914, a "Prize Court" was established to process claims against property seized from the country's wartime enemies. Supreme Court Law Stamps were overprinted “IN PRIZE” and affixed to documents to pay registration fees related to these seizures. (Image 1) (Image 2)

461 og FSW3 image1918, 25c orange Timbre d’Économie (War Savings), French inscription, a pleasing mint hinged stamp of fresh colour, a few minor gum bends of little consequence given the importance of this key revenue, a fine example of this exceptional rarity, destined for an advanced collection.

Printed by the American Bank Note Company, these “thrift stamps” were affixed to War Savings documents to raise funds for the war effort while promoting regular savings habits among Canadians. Designed to be affordable, they enabled Canadian families, including those with modest means and children, to contribute financially to the war. (Image 1)
