884 CVR   image1883 (January) Bavaria to New York, returned postage due unpaid cover, postmarked with Brockenau despatch, struck with boxed "T" and New York "Due 10 Cents" opera glasses upon arrival, further struck on reverse with New York transit c.d.s. (30 Jan), forwarded to Jersey City and affixed with strip of four, a pair, and two singles of the 1c postage due, the addressee evidently not found and the cover returned, whereupon struck with "Advertised " and "Feb 10 1883" datestamp, triangular DEAD LETTER OFFICE datestamp on reverse, affixed on front with yellow "Letter returned by Carrier" label and struck with black framed "Retour" handstamp, applied on return to Germany with three Wurzburg "returned letter" seals, some small edge tears, of little importance given the circuitous travels of this cover, fine and most unusual. 887 CVR   image1892 (January 22), S.S. Eider Shipwreck cover, New York to Frankfurt, Germany, postmarked with New York duplex, handstamped with violet “Per Eider” and VIA ENGLAND, wrecked en route to London and struck with violet two-line 'Frankirter Brief aus / gestrandetem D. Eider geborgen,' no backstamps, faults at right, but a most unusual disaster cover; The Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer 'Eider', on a voyage from New York to Southampton was stranded on the Atherfield Ledge near St. Catherines Point, half a mile from the Isle of Wight, at 10 p.m on the 31st of January, 1892. It was first thought that the steamer was undamaged, and that she could be refloated. By the following evening it was decided to disembark the passengers, and at the same time some of the mail was also landed. The following day, with the seas breaking over the ship, which was by now leaking badly, the aft holds which contained the remaining mail was full of water. On the morning of February 3, with others unloaded over the following days by divers, and the three violet cachets found on this cover were applied. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (All Scans)
