1855 (March 15), London to Trujillo, Peru, via Panama, folded letter, franked with 1sh pair (Sc.48, Plate 4), tied by dual strikes of London '24' barred oval, red "Lombard Street / Paid" c.d.s. alongside, endorsed in manuscript "per West India Mail", Panama double split-ring (8 Apr) struck below, reverse with straight-line TRUJILLO receiver in black, redirected thence to Lima, whereupon struck with oval "CONDUCCION DEL CARTERO GRATIS" in black, light wrinkles and the odd trivial toned perf, else fine; this letter travelled on the R.M.S. 1871 (July 15), London to Santa Ana, El Salvador, via Panama, folded letter, franked with 6d lilac (Plate 9) and 1sh green (Plate 5), tied by London '76' duplex, with dater die "Z" normally indicative of a late fee, this apparently paid in cash as noted by the adjacent manuscript "1", "4" (reales) in blue crayon denoting the rate for domestic delivery, handstruck blue "VIA SOUTHAMPTON" route directive with "Panama" in manuscript below, carried on the R.M.S. 1972, Robert Scott Antarctic Expedition survivor-signed First Day Cover, franked with Polar Explorers set (Sc. 664-7), with Philart fundraising cachet, signed by C.S. Wright, the only Canadian on the ill-fated 1910-1913 expedition, who led the search party and was the first to find Scott's tent where the expedition leader perished, trivial gum residue on front from detached label, not detracting from this desirable and otherwise very fine cover.
