Ile Aux Noix Camp opened in July, 1940, when the first inmates arrived from England via the ship "Sobieski"; in July, 1941, they were reclassified as refugees and thus lost the right to free postage provided to prisoners of war. 727 CVR   image1941 (October 28), Camp "F", Fort Henry, Kingston, rejected incoming mail to Narvik Destroyer officer, postmarked with Detroit slogan despatch, to Captain Gunter Kray, Camp F, censor seal at left, struck with rose REJECTED handstamp on front (Miller 984), stamp removed, else a fine example from this survivor of the Battle of Narvik. Gunter Kray was an officer on the Destroyer Z12 - Erich Geise, sunk in an exchange with the HMS Punjabi and HMS Bedouin; Kray was one of the few men rescued by the HMS Foxhound.

731 CVR   image1944 (January 14), Red Cross Express Message card, Netherlands to Lethbridge Camp, from a volunteer at the Air Force Hospital, Amsterdam, to NCO Hans Brunsbach, a survivor of the sinking of U331, struck with circular rose Internment Operations censor at lower right, a few small repairs at foot to this very delicate paper, else quite fresh and fine, an uncommon usage of this messenger service, established to facilitate the exchange of news between Prisoners of War and their next of kin if they had been without news for more than three months. The recipient of this card served on U331, one of the first U-Boats to enter the Mediterranean. She landed commandos between Tobruk and El Alamein in November, 1941, but was sunk the following year by an FAA Albacore; the Commander and 17 crew survived. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (All Scans)
