786 CVR Stormont image1854 Manuscript Aultsville Folded Letter, mailed Aultsville (manuscript despatch dated APR.14.1854, the earliest reported date, and only 10 days after the post office opened) rated manuscript "3" to Cornwall (same day receiver on back). The contents are a "Return of Convictions before Samuel Ault" listing convicts , etc. Samuel Ault was an M.P. for Stormont county from 1867 to 1872 and at the time this letter was written he was a warden there. He led an interesting life which can be followed online on several sites. Aultsville was submerged and disappeared when the St. Lawrence seaway was built. Very fine and rare.

We note an 1868 cover mailed from Stockton, California to Welland, redirected from Port Colborne, with "Welland Railroad Down" RPO transit on back, various rate handstamps, corks, duplex, machine and slogans, a few postcards, many Welland corner cards, etc. Also noted a Crowland U.C. (rare, from 1847), Merrittsville C.W. (very rare as post office open only 9 years), nice "old aqueduct at Welland" view (from an old book), etc. Mixed condition, with many very fine.
